Evo Morales: Socialist Dupe

From Powerline:

Reuters reports that Bolivian president Evo Morales has paid homage to Che Guevara at the spot where the legendary leftist guerrilla was killed in 1967. This may be an opportune moment to direct readers to the New Criterion article “The real Che” by Anthony Daniels (who frequently writes under the pen name Theodore Dalrymple) and the National Review article “Che chic” by NR managing editor Jay Nordlinger. I took a whack at Hollywood’s contribution to Che chic in “Motorpsycho diaries.” As the subhead on Jay Nordlinger’s article has it, “It’s très disgusting.”

UPDATE: Reader Jonathan Philbeck writes:

In regards to your Che post, I think it would be appropriate to note Andy Garcia’s movie “The Lost City,” which portrays Che accurately. I believe Bolivia is one of the nations that has banned this film. I saw it recently and it is a great film, very powerful with a lot of substance. Hollywood appears to be ignoring it, as it hasn’t been picked up by a major distributor and on a very limited release.

  1. I was just at a conference in San Antonio, and a representative of a Bolivian company stopped by our booth and as the only Spanish speaking person there, I got to talk to him. I asked about his new president Evo, and the man gave me a smile, ran his thumb and index finger across his mouth as if he were manipulating a zipper and said “no puedo comentar.” The thumb of totalitarianism 3,000 miles away!

  2. Yesterday Che’s birthday was also remembred in his native town, Rosario (Argentina). Obviously, the ambassadors of Venezuela and Cuba joined the party.

  3. did anybody thought any different of evo morales? it was clear to me what kind of guy this was when I saw him getting mad when Jorge Ramos asked him about castro-

  4. Well coming from a little different perspective on this considering I live In Argentina, well So far as for Evo is concerned I am in favor of hims thus far. He has be honest (to my knowledge) in his campaigne and then does what he ran on. My largest worry with him is the petro deal he and Hugo have made. However with Evo recognizing the death spot of Ché well how I understood this (according to the local papers) was that he was going to try to advance his country’s tourism.

On a different part, many in this part of the world do Idolize him almost as if he were a god of some sort. This is due to faulty teaching of whom he really was. This failure is not just due to the media, but also the society as a whole from the governemnts (schools) to the individual family memebers failing in educating what Ché was. I say what due to he was nothing but a thug and murderer. When he first started out in his journey as a doctor one could admire his works. Later in his life however, we can only condemn him for his greed of power. He had not a drive for freeing the people and uniting Laitin America, but only had drive to serve himself with any form of power he could gain.

    Chau Y Suerte.
