[...] Babalu Blog has a blogburst today about the World Baseball Classic and Cuba’s sadly enslaved b.... The post is pegged to the top of the page and it includes a song parody of “Take Me Out To The Ball Game,” a special graphic and this: Cuba is one of the few countries in the world that prohibits its citizens from leaving without government permission, a violation of the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Because Cuba’s athletic teams compete internationally the participants are constantly shadowed by members of Cuba’s state security apparatus. The primary objective of Cuban state security is to prevent defections which embarrass the Castro regime and deplete the country of athletic talent. In Democratic countries like the United States this presents a perverse situation where Cuban athletes are basically deprived of their rights to move freely. [...]

i had the fortune of being able to travel to baltimore for the exhibition game between the orioles and the cuban national team. we were there to protest prior to the game and then go to the game in an effort to get close to the players. it is amazing the kind of security that travels with the team. The entire dugout (15 rows back by maybe 10 rows wider than the dugout) is reserved for people that are traveling with the team (read: state security). anyone else is strictly forbidden from entering this area. When we tried to get closer to the dugout to communicate with the players, we were promptly ejected from the stadium and almost arrested. The most disgusting part to me about the whole thing was how people living in a free nation (baltimore PD, orioles organization, stadium security, etc) colluded with the cuban apparatus to keep the players segregated and confined. You're right that it would be an embarrassment to the cuban government if a player escaped, but what was our excuse in helping keep these players with the cuban team? Lost revenue? who knows!
