Yes; they loved it when Yoani wrote that she wanted Obama to win so that there would be a change in the embargo, which she thinks should be lifted. But what about the rest of Yoani's critique of Castroite Cuba being a failed state? How much has the Huffington Post done to present Yoani's viewpoint on the Cuban Revolution to the American people?

The answer is they have done almost nothing. By their avoidance of a realistic assessment of what life in Cuba is like for the Cuban people, and especially why the Cuban people are oppressed under Castroite rule, the Huffington Post gives its silent endorsement to the leftist approval of Castro's rule. They only use Yoani to suit their purposes.

Though I disagree with that blanket approach to lifting the embargo Yoani supports, I am willing to consider it thoughtfully because I cannot envision an approach to the establishment of a free, democratic, and just Cuba with a government that serves the needs of its people without listening to what those Cubans who are struggling to stand up to Castroite oppression are telling us they want. I have no fear of addressing Yoani's views because I will not run from any position on U.S. policy presented thoughtfully, which Yoani has done, though she has not addressed the larger context within which the embargo is viewed from the American perspective.

But if we apply that same standard to the Huffington Post, I submit that they fail to meet this standard. And it is not just with respect to Cuba, but to all of Latin America. Their support for Chavez's programs suppresses the truth to an unbelievable extent. They cannot be treated as showing real sensitivity to the plight of the Cuban people so long as they limit the discussion.

The real distinction that must be drawn with regard to who treats Yoani with true respect and who uses her for their own purposes essentially comes down to the extent of the discussion of everything which takes place in Cuba and the larger context of Latin America today. The Huffington Post fails this test miserably.
