Haiti Needs US
Miami is home to the largest population of Haitians and Haitian-Americans in the country and local news has been covering the events in Haiti, and the repercussions here in South Florida, almost exclusively and it is heartbreaking. The country is in shambles, death and destruction everywhere, desperation, need, hunger, pain.
Aid is arriving but as with any disiter of this magnitude, it is slow in reaching the people and somewhat disorganized. But please do not let the logistics of this situation dissuade you from donating whatever you can. It will take years to bring that country back up from the rubble and without assistance from abroad I dont think that country can fully recover.
Please sacrifice a few dollars and donate to a worthy charity working with the people of Haiti. if you cant decide on any particular organization, please consider donating to Pan America Relief, they are the disiater relief armof the Pan American Development Foundation and already have infrastructure in place to get the assistance there quickly. If you cant donate via their webpage you can donate via telephone at 1-877-572-4484.
And if you cant donate monetarily, please take this Martin Luther King Day to volunteer a few hours for any charity, church organization collecating much needed goods for the people of Haiti.

Here's a funny sideline. Ortega says the U.S. is only helping Haiti because it wants to occupy it.
Ortega would like to occupy it, but he has no resources to help the country. And if we occupied it, the country would finally have a chance.
Yeah, that whole "occupation" thing was started by our wonderful friends in France. Haiti is, as it's always been, a complete mess. Being that there is no infrastructure, there is no systematic way of getting the drastically needed supplies in to the suffering people. Some of these countries that are generously sending supplies are doing so only halfway. They simply drop ship and take off. Naturally it's almost impossible for the planes to land, so perhaps that is what's causing all these pallets to lay untouched on the ground for days. Whatever the case, it has been the US who has stayed around and fully committed to bring some organization into the chaos. And this is part of what's called 'occupation'!
But that's the way it goes, the US for all its generosity and collective good will, will always be criticized by these European nations. Dammed if we do and dammed if we don't.
