Of course, the New York Times and the rest of the American MSM is all but ignoring this. One can only imagine what would have happened if Fariñas had been a Chilean under Pinochet, a South African under apartheid, or a Haitian under Cedras.
If he dies have of the blame falls squarely on the shoulders of the New York Times and the rest of the American MSM.
Fox News has been ignoring this as well because I haven't seen shit about this being reported. Well to be fair I haven't been watching the news lately either. But still you'd think Breitbart, Drudge, or Reason would report on this. Damas cuando les combienen.
BBC just reported on Fariñas, BUT OF COURSE, the article has this title:
"Cuba says will not be 'blackmailed' by hunger striker"
and it ends on this lovely little note:
"Cuba's illegal but tolerated Human Rights Commission says there are about 200 political prisoners still held in Cuba, about one-third less than when Raul Castro took over as president from his brother Fidel."
How lovely, when the mainstream media finally reports on Fariñas, they do so from a pro-regime vantage point that essentially praises raul for his "reforms". No wonder Lula of Brazil gets away with his OUTRAGEOUS statements.
How absolutely horrific that the media continues to shill for the tyranny even if it means that dissidents are dying. How do you say accomplice?

no one cares. can't believe some of you are figuring this out now. they don't give a damn unless there is a mass execution AND they have film of it. I wouldn't even calling it shilling for the regime, quite simply Cuba doesn't matter to them. it does not affect thier lives one little bit. why do you think Castro Inc. has run the place for 50 years? If Cuba did matter wouldn't be having this discussion.

Ray, I understand your sentiments perfectly. But remember, it doesn't matter to them because they have an entire stronghold of wrong information firmly engrained in their minds. For 50 years the world has been told of how these coragious rebel freeds their country from a cruel dictator. They are told of this wonderful free health care and free education (which they asume is a miraculous achievement over a completely illiterate, third world nation. They visit the island and are treated to paradise staging. We all know what this is, but they don't know they are brainwashed, the media instills collective thinking, and the media reflects that thinking back in an ever persistent vicious circle of illusion.
Oh yeah, the BBC. Think of all the Brits who enjoy 15 year old prostitutes in the island paradise - think they want to give that up? Screw those dissidents!
I agree that using Tweeter and Facebook is one weapon for which we can be thankful. Those of you who have it, use it and use it well, folks!

With regards to the "no one cares" argument:
yeah, it seems that way and I have to agree that it is frustrating and maddening. But that just means that we have to work harder. Let's not just put the plate of food in front of everyone, lets put the plate of food in front of them and grab a big spoon and shove the damned food down their throats.
that "you can lead a horse to water but you cant make him drink" thing is bullshit. Give me a hose and watch me shove it down its throat and turn on the water full blast. Tha'll fucking MAKE him drink alright.
the internet is our greatest weapon. Go nuclear with it. use blogs, email, facebook, myspcae, twitter, youtube, forums, whatever venue there is where there are readers and use a big spoon.

It's not a matter of the mainstream media not caring about Cuba, its a matter of them caring in the wrong direction! Believe me, Cuba receives far more press coverage than any other country in Latin America. In fact, the media seems to be there waiting with baited breath for the castro's to say anything! It doesn't matter how stupid and asinine the remarks are, they uncritically print the dribble. No other Latin American president receives as much uncritical press coverage. Cuba opens up a new hotel in Old Havana and that receives press, raul starts selling computers that nobody can afford and that is hailed as a wonderful reform akin to Gorbachev's reforms, etc...
So, I beg to differ, they do care, but not in a way that is beneficial to Cuba. I call that shilling for the regime.
The MSM cares alright, they care to keep the Castro brothers in power at all costs, no matter who dies in Cuba in the process.
The MSM also cares about implementing a form of Marxist/Socialism system in America today. Therefore it's love affair with the Marxist anti-American bullshit artist POTUS we have in office, the Hollywood idiots and everything that is lefty in our country.
The MSM is part of the conspiracy to destroy the very fiber of our country that took over 200 years to build. Whether they realize the consequences to all of us if they succeed in their irresponsible efforts is another story.
Val is right that we must keep fighting in the internet bringing the truth about Cuba, the truth that the MSM is unwilling to share with the masses.
