I like Carlos Eire a lot. I've read his essays on Cuba and his memoir, but I'm not sure what the point of this interview is? Why is he adding fuel to the kindle on the so-called assassination attempts?
I'm sure that all world leaders are the victims of assassination attempts. Over a span of 50+ years, 650 harebrained, half-assed assassination attempts is nothing. It's more of an indictment against those that tried to kill him, rather than his ability to foil those attempts. I think that if the CIA wanted to really kill him, they would have. This country never really had the desire to get rid of Castro. It's been documented, from Kennedy on to other administrations.
In any case, getting back to assassination attempts. Compare castro to other world leaders. Think of Israel. Can you imagine how many assassination attempts the Israeli Prime Minister is the victim of? probably in the 10 of thousands. Do you hear the media making a big deal about it? Do you hear the Israeli government turning their prime minister into some sort of deity?
Truly, I find this whole garbage about castro and assassination attempts vomitous. You can see how castro just relishes talking about it and how the media loves to bring it up. Its their way of poking a finger in Uncle Sam's eye. It's like Hahahaha...Castro screwed you up again! You failed.
But like I say, take it in perspective. Imagine how many assassination attempts other world leaders are victims of. The difference is that they don't make a big deal about it, and the press here doesn't harp on it. Honestly folks.... Let's now play into castro's hands.
Carlos was suspicious of the BBC to begin with, patiently explaining to them that most assassination attempts against Castro WERE HOME-GROWN--NOT CIA-hatched. That was the main rationale for Carlos' agreeing to the interview, to drive home this point...and Carlos dearly hoped they'd include this.
Well, the BBC cut most of this stuff out. It didn't fit their template.
Never trust the BBC! They are filled with leftists of various stripes and we will NEVER get a fair chance there.
I work in media and have worked in London for years.
I heard this interview when it was aired on the world service and frankly I was disappointed.
First; The BBC made sure to refer to Batista as a dictator but Castro as a "leader". The guest should have made a point of that reflexive bias right there.
Second, there was far too much joking and laughing in this interview. Thousands paid with their lives in order to take Castro out and save generations from tyranny and they make Castro look like a jaunty hero.
This was all a big joke to the English twits in their posh BBC studios in London.
Rob,
Sometimes you have to laugh in order not to cry.
Cuba's showing this film reminds me of Pelosi and the msm crying that they are now the target of death threats from the right stirred up by the ravings of Rush and Palin.
In Castro's case, as the professor asserts, it is the concept of I am godlike because I have survived all the attempts to assassinate me. In the case of Pelosi et al they are so self centered and empty of substance that they must make themselves important by railing against these fictional death threats.

Correction: for the last sentence, I mean't to say:
Lets NOT play into castro's hands.

Humberto,
Thanks for clarifying this. Now it makes sense. Figures that BBC would do this.
