I believe the moronic comment made by the spokesman for Israel's foreign ministry not only personifies his and possibly the ministry's ignorance, but also speaks volumes to the remarkable marketing job the media and the elites on the left have done with Che. They've taken a smelly, imbecilic, rambling fool who was a pernicious coward and turned him into some kind of super hero. Talk about sewing a silk purse out of sow's ear.
It is so sad to think that Yigal Palmor actually thought he was insulting Fidel with that remark.

Many people are in love with the "idea" of who they think Che is. In the popular imagination is a doctor who was so moved by latin American poverty that he decided to overthrow a brutal dictator and then make sure that every Cuban could read and have land to farm. The fact that this "idea" is false doesn't matter to most people.
There is ignorance and acceptance of misinformation here, but there may be more. The Israelis are under constant attacks from the left, which go as far as calling them fascists and even Nazi-like. They may feel they can get some PR mileage out of going along with the Che myth, a major leftist cult. As a corollary to that, they probably feel they cannot publicly bash such a sacred cow for fear of the inevitable backlash, which may have been one reason even John Paul II wouldn't go there. But yes, if anyone should know better, that would be the Israelis.
