“If I were given the choice again, I would have remained in prison instead of exile.” Alejandro González Raga.

By Zoé Valdés:

Alejandro González Raga is one of the most consistent and most honorable men I have ever met. I have had the privilege of talking to him on various occasions, and more extensively with him and his wife, a woman with an infinite tenderness in her eyes and in her smile; the conversation took place over lunch.

Alejandro González Raga, one of the 75 journalists, left Cuba two years ago under the same circumstances as the prisoners who have just been released. He is 50 years old with children. Neither he nor his wife has found work in Spain and Zapatero’s government has not bothered to help them find it. His eyes cloud over with pain and he looks away when he tells me, “Who is going to hire a 50 year old man? I have looked everywhere…”

Raga has taken computer courses on his own and he wrote a book about his experiences in prison and his dissidence. He speaks with unequaled sincerity and valor, but at the same time he is a very simple man. I believe that if a person who lives in Spain can help this man and his wife find work, they would be doing something huge for this family. He is not asking for help, he does not ask for anything. He is looking for work. Any businessman that hires him will not regret it because his honesty is overwhelming.
