“Moratinos Diplomacy” Condemning Thousands of Political Prisoners to Anonymously Languish in Cuban Dictatorship Dungeons
Diaz-Balarts and Ros-Lehtinen condemn Moratinos’ efforts to save Cuban dictatorship
Washington, DC – U.S. Congressmen Lincoln Diaz-Balart, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, and Mario Diaz-Balart issued the following statement today regarding the maneuvers being carried out by Spanish Foreign Minister M.A. Moratinos to save the dictatorship of Fidel Castro and his puppet-brother:
“The Cuban dictatorship, facing extraordinary pressure inside the island due to the heroic actions of the internal opposition, as well as the economic pressure of U.S. sanctions, is seeking to relieve that pressure through the expulsion of a number of political prisoners from Cuba. In order to achieve diplomatic and economic relief, the Cuban regime has obtained the services of Spanish Foreign Minister M.A. Moratinos.
Mr. Moratinos seeks to convince the European Union (EU) to drop its “Common Position” on Cuba (which conditions an improvement in EU relations with Cuba to an improvement in the Human Rights situation there). Moratinos and his associates also seek to assist efforts in the U.S. Congress to pass a bill authorizing mass U.S. tourism and its billions of dollars for the Cuban regime. The Cuban regime is one of a handful of States in the world that are state sponsors of international terrorism, and harbors numerous violent fugitives from US justice. When the regime received billions of dollars annually from the Soviet Union (an amount similar to what it would receive from US tourism) it spread terrorism to countries throughout the world.
By accepting reports placing the number of Cuban political prisoners at below 200, Moratinos’ "diplomacy" seeks to condemn thousands of political prisoners in Cuba to languish in Castro's dungeons indefinitely. Serious, credible sources inside Cuba, such as former political prisoner and pro-democracy leader Jorge Luis Garcia Perez “Antunez", maintain that there are thousands of men and women in prisons in Cuba due to their political beliefs but under farcical “criminal charges” such as “peligrosidad” (dangerousness) and “desacato a la autoridad” (contempt against authority).
Those thousands of Cuban political prisoners, and the countless thousands more that would be arrested in the future by a reinvigorated dictatorship in possession of billions of US dollars and newly found international diplomatic support, would be condemned to anonymously languish in the dungeons of the dictatorship.
“Now more than ever the world must insist upon the liberation of all Cuban political prisoners, without exceptions, including the thousands who are in Castro's gulag for farcical “criminal charges”, and upon free, multi-party elections for Cuba. There are only two Cubans who need to leave Cuba forever along with Moratinos, Fidel Castro and his puppet-brother,” said Congressman Lincoln Diaz-Balart.
“The Castro thugs have never allowed credible international groups to inspect prison conditions on the island and visitors like Moratinos don't even attempt to make such a demand, so the dictatorship continues to cynically classify political dissidents as common criminals. It is a cruel charade which players like Moratinos are only too happy to perpetuate as they enrich their coffers while using the long suffering Cuban people as pawns,” said Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.
“Mr. Moratinos continues to be dedicated to the defense of the Cuban terrorist regime. He is once again attempting to divert attention from the need for freedom for the Cuban people through multiparty elections”, said Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart.”
