Oscar Biscet: 'We are at a defining moment'
Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet and his wife Elsa Morejón.
Martinoticias.com has published an interview with former Cuban prisoner of conscience Dr. Oscar Elias Biscet. Here are a few highlights (the translations are my own):
On his health.
I feel better, with the help of my wife and especially of God, I have recuperated and soon will be able to increase my human rights work.
On his decision to stay in Cuba instead of taking exile.
I want to work for human rights, and until the inalienable rights of individuals are established and they are treated with dignity, I can never leave my country.
On differences between Fidel Castro and Raúl Castro since Raúl became head of the dictatorship.
Well, what has changed is the increased repression. ... There is a state terror against people who express themselves freely and who can end up in prison. They're not jailing people for many years, just short periods of time, even for hours.
On what the Cuban people need to do.
I think the Cuban people must act directly on the streets to win their rights, and the international community must support them to avoid a civil war in Cuba.
On whether the Cuban people are ready for change after more than 50 years of dictatorship.
We are at a defining moment. ... I think if the if the Cuban people are informed and we organize ourselves well, we can mobilze their interest in human rights and achieve their freedom.
On whether an Egypt-style rebellion, which relied heavily on the Internet and other technologies, is possible in Cuba.
Remember that here the government dominates all the means of communication and people have no access to buying phones, which are very expensive. Keeping a phone line is very expensive. There are eleven million people and there are only about eight hundred thousand who have mobile phones.... However we will continue using these means, and we will go house to house, to tell the people that we are here to win their freedom. If we do not have modern communication channels, we will use the old ways to reach the people.
