Cultural Exchange II

In conjunction with the Si Cuba!  (Whose partner organizations include The Int'l Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban 5 and SPARC) event at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, Arturo Sandoval is in concert at the Hollywood Bowl with Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club featuring Omara Portuondo.

This special Cuban-themed evening of scorching rhythms and infectious improvisations includes projections of photos depicting historic and present day Cuba.

AUG 24: This concert will feature photo projections from the Getty’s historic photographic exhibit, A Revolutionary Project: Cuba from Walker Evans to Now, showing May 17-Oct 2, 2011 at the Getty Center.

Isn't that truly special.  The prodigal son, an escaped slave now living in freedom, dances for the former slave master.

This just breaks my heart, as I just love, love, Arturo's music.  No more.

Here's the graphic of choice for Si Cuba, they should get together with Oliphant.

Ziva, I agree with you. This is heartbreaking. I even have a DVD copy of the Arturo Sandoval Story that was produced by Andy Garcia. It's a great movie that shows the persecution and hardships that Sandoval suffered in order to escape Cuba, and now this????

Sandoval's participation in this event which as you pointed out is organized by the likes of the Committee for the Freedom of the Cuban 5, will give this propaganda fest a patina of non-partisanship that it does not deserve, it will also guarantee that people who would otherwise not patronize this month-long event will now go.

I can't imagine why Sandoval agreed to participate. What is even more disturbing is that the Cuban exile community has apparently been neutered. There is no organized outcry. Can you imagine if apartheid South Africa had done something similar 20 years ago? Hollywood would have been in an uproar!

This together with the post by George above exemplifies what it means when someone says, "This is not a normal world."
