Cuban political prisoner: ‘Release me or I will die’

Cuban political prisoner Jorge Cervantes Garcia has begun a hunger strike in protest of his illegal detention and to demand his immediate release. The first words he said to his mother when she was finally allowed by Castro prison officials to see her son were "Mami, they release me or I will die. Nothing nor nobody is going to stop me from continuing to struggle for the end of this dictatorship."

Uncommon Sense has the report:

Cuba political prisoner Jorge Cervantes García on hunger strike

Refusing to take "No" from the Castro dictatorship for an answer, Alba Verdecía García on Tuesday was able have a short visit with her son, the political prisoner Jorge Cervantes Garcia, who has been on hunger strike for 10 days to demand his immediate release.

One officer, then another denied Garcia a chance to see her son. When she threatened to start her own hunger strike, another officer relented, hoping that Garcia would be able sway Cervantes to end his protest.

His first words  upon seeing his mother, according to a report filed by exiled Cuban journalist Lamasiel Gutierrez Romero, made clear that wasn't about to happen.

"Mami, they release me or I will die," Cervantes said. "Nothing nor nobody is going to stop me from continuing to struggle for the end of this dictatorship."

Cervantes was arrested March 29. An official told his mother that he was being ordered to serve 4 years remaining on a sentence for a conviction related to his anti-Castro activities.

In total, Cervantes has served about 15 years in prison, which has taken a terrible toll on his health -- a situation only aggravated by his current hunger strike.

Cervantes is the brother of former political prisoner Agustin Cervantes, who earlier this year was released and forced into exile in Spain.

Even if he dies, it will accomplish no more than Zapata's death, and probably less. The regime is getting better at damage control for this sort of thing, and the usual suspects are only too willing to let it get away with murder (look at the last dissident death and how far that got). The usual suspects would never treat his death the way they treated Steven Biko's, for instance. The game is very clearly rigged.
