Castro regime arrests Ladies in White before pope’s mass in Havana

The entire world knows of the atrocities and repression that took place against Cuba's Catholic dissidents in Cuba, in particular the Ladies in White, before and during the pope's visit. For the most part, everyone appears appalled and outraged that such vile and despicable acts were taking place while the vicar of Christ was on the island.

Everyone, except the Vatican and the pope.

Members of a Catholic dissident group have reportedly been arrested by Cuban police just a few hours before they planned to attend an outdoor Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI.

Alejandrina Garcia de la Rivas and Laura Maria Labrada Pollan, members of the Ladies in White – “Damas de Blanco” – were arrested before 6am today, according to Blanca Reyes, a member of the organisation who now lives Madrid, Spain.

The previous evening, Garcia and Labrada had given an interview to the American Catholic News Service at Labrada’s home in the city’s Old Havana neighborhood.

The Ladies in White, relatives of former political prisoners, march every Sunday after Mass at Havana’s St Rita of Casia Church to protest against human rights violations by Cuba’s communist regime.
