Comic Joey Diaz brings his Cuban-style comedy to Miami Improv
Any stand-up comedian will agree: True stories draw people in. Coupled with comedy, they have an intoxicating effect on an audience.
That combination is what Cuban-born comic Joey “Coco” Diaz will bring to his three-day run at the Miami Improv in Coconut Grove starting Thursday.
The meat of Diaz’s material is his hardscrabble life as a Cuban kid on the streets of New Jersey all the way to his prison stint.
He has fined-tuned tales of delinquency and the wisdom that follows after years of living through them.
Diaz brand of humor has already gained him a legion of loyal fans, not only on stage, but Internet podcasts.
Born in Camaguey, Cuba, his family fled Cuba and settled in Union City, New Jersey — the Havana on the Hudson.
“My mother lost everything when she left Cuba. In Jersey, she sold drinks, we ran the numbers, and we had a bolita business. We did it all,” he said. “But that’s where I get my b…. and that’s what comes through on the podcast.”
Diaz has a South Florida connection. He spent summers with close family friends in Miami and remembers attending Red Berry’s baseball camp. And la saguesera. And Monkey Jungle, the tourist attraction off South Dixie Highway. “When we first went there, that was nothing but swamp, this is 1969…for a New York kid it was amazing, I’d go home with a thousand stories”, he said.
Now he’s happy to be back in South Florida to perform.
“I’m excited about going down there,” Diaz said. “I’m exciting about La Carreta…I’m working out all three days, I’m sticking to my Weight Watcher points, ’cause when I go down, there I’m going crazy!”
Joey Diaz will be at the Miami Improv, 3390 Mary St, starting Thursday through Saturday. Tickets are $15. Diaz’s latest release, It’s Either You or the Priest, goes on iTunes April 13th.
