Decisions on U.S. Assistance Based Solely on U.S. National Security Interests, Ros-Lehtinen Says
(WASHINGTON) - U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement today rejecting claims that she decided not to block a portion of U.S. assistance to West Bank and Gaza in exchange for Mahmoud Abbas asking the Cuban regime to release imprisoned American contractor Alan Gross:
“I don’t know what goes on between the Palestinian leadership and the Cuban leadership, but I certainly have no involvement in it. Any claims to the contrary are false, and don’t even pass the laugh test.
“All decisions on Palestinian assistance are based on the merits, discussions with the State and Defense Departments, and on U.S. national security interests and priorities. At no point did Alan Gross factor into the decisions concerning proposed U.S. aid to the Palestinians. Further, the Obama Administration’s decision to send all remaining economic aid to the Palestinians was over my continued objections.”
