Visit the Cuban Memorial Monument

El Memorial 2003.  We will never forget, because as Val wrote back in 2005,  the crosses placed in a field  to represent the hundreds of thousands of Cubans and others whose deaths are attributed to the brutality of fidel castro's regime, and are  as quoted, ''For me,'' said Marta Tamargo, who gave birth to her son Leopoldo in Havana just as Castro was consolidating power,  "they all are relatives."

Thank you so much for posting this. I had heard about the Memorial but I had not known (or perhaps remembered) that it bore a resemblance to the fields at Normandy.

I am a bit curious about the "hundreds of thousands" figure. I have heard that, if you take into account the dreadful shark attacks and so forth, the figure is about 100,000-115,000 since 1960. Of course, it's inherently difficult to get reliable numbers from a vicious tyranny, so I'm quite prepared to think it's much higher than that.

So many of the folks who fought Castro were and are such stellar and admirable figures -- it's great to know that at least SOME of the victims of Communism have a worthwhile monument to their moving belief in freedom, a belief pursued even unto death itself.

Matt, the precise number of the victims of Castro, Inc. will never be established with certainty, but remember this: a victim need not actually be killed, for it is possible to be dead in life, or so damaged and hurt that it amounts to the same thing. There does not have to be an actual jail for there to be imprisonment. There does not have to be physical violence or blood for there to be very serious pain and suffering. The victims of Castro, Inc., in one way or another, are not hundreds of thousands, but millions.
