Dude - it's a play. Not only that but it's a classic work of literature. The only piece of popular entertainment to not only portray a man's relationship with God in a positive light but also the Church. Jean Valjean finds redemption only after being saved by a kindly Bishop. He then sacrifices all to care for a little girl. The bad guy in all this? An official with an unbending authoritarian mindset.
the play hews very closely to the book and the red flag was the flag used by the republicans (anti-monarchists) of the Rebellion of 1832. If they want to be historically accurate, that is the flag that they would use.
God I hope you are trying to be funny and not being serious. You aren't seriously upset about the flag are you?
Cardinal, I'm not upset at all. After all, it's only a little indoctrination among friends.

If it's only a play, then why the red flag? (And I've the book so I know exactly what it's about.)
"Lord in heaven look down on him in mercy
Forgive me all my trespasses
And take me to Your Glory...
...And remember the truth that once was spoken
To love another person
Is to see the face of God"
