Joe “Efferdent” Biden rapped on the knuckles by the Catholic Church

Catholic Bishops in the U.S. jumped on the fact-checking bandwagon yesterday, pointing out that Joe Biden’s remarks concerning the impact of Obamacare on religious institutions were totally wrong.   Biden claimed that the HHS contraception mandate will not force Catholic institutions to pay for abortions and contraceptives.  He then capped off his lying (or ignorance) by stating emphatically: “That is a fact. That is a fact.” Paul Ryan did his best to undercut Uncle Joe’s rhetorical acrobatics by simply asking the obvious question:  “Why are they suing you, then?” — in reference to the law suit filed by the Catholic Church against Obamacare’s contraception mandate.

This issue came up as the last question in the debate, when Ryan and Biden were both asked to comment on their Catholic faith and how it affects their public service.  The question was a booby trap intended for Ryan, of course, for the moderator knew fully well that Ryan could come off sounding like a rabid papist, as someone who serves the Vatican rather than the American people.  Ryan escaped the trap by pointing out that his take on abortion was grounded in reason and science and not just on the dictates of the Catholic Church.   Biden gave a heretical answer that would earn him an “F” in any Catholic theology course and could also lead to his excommunication.   The basic error committed by Biden was this:  he said he believed life begins at conception –as the Church teaches — but that he also believes that abortion should be legal.  This amounts to saying that it is perfectly alright to disregard the teachings of the Church and to murder the unborn.  Even worse, Biden then tried to cloak his sanctimonious prevarications with an aura of righteousness by claiming that his blatant disregard for the sanctity of life is somehow a faithful adherence to Catholic teaching on issues of “social justice.”

A drop in the ocean, one might say.  What difference does this make?  This insult to reason was but one of many that Biden foisted on the public on thursday night.  One more stinking item piled on top of a trash heap.   Think again.  The latest Pew poll shows that Catholics are now the largest denomination in the United States, at nearly 25 percent of the total population.   Many Catholics still listen to their bishops.  Many bishops and their clergy are likely to bring up this issue in church this sunday and every other sunday until the election.  And Catholics are a substantial part of the population in many of the most important swing states.  Biden’s heretical turn and his disregard for facts could end up costing him and Obama much more than any of his other gaffes.

United States Conference of Catholic Bishops Responds To Inaccurate Statement Of Fact On HHS Mandate Made During Vice Presidential Debate

October 12, 2012
WASHINGTON—The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued the following statement, October 12. Full text follows:

Last night, the following statement was made during the Vice Presidential debate regarding the decision of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to force virtually all employers to include sterilization and contraception, including drugs that may cause abortion, in the health insurance coverage they provide their employees:

“With regard to the assault on the Catholic Church, let me make it absolutely clear. No religious institution—Catholic or otherwise, including Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital—none has to either refer contraception, none has to pay for contraception, none has to be a vehicle to get contraception in any insurance policy they provide. That is a fact. That is a fact.”
This is not a fact. The HHS mandate contains a narrow, four-part exemption for certain “religious employers.” That exemption was made final in February and does not extend to “Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital,” or any other religious charity that offers its services to all, regardless of the faith of those served.

HHS has proposed an additional “accommodation” for religious organizations like these, which HHS itself describes as “non-exempt.” That proposal does not even potentially relieve these organizations from the obligation “to pay for contraception” and “to be a vehicle to get contraception.” They will have to serve as a vehicle, because they will still be forced to provide their employees with health coverage, and that coverage will still have to include sterilization, contraception, and abortifacients. They will have to pay for these things, because the premiums that the organizations (and their employees) are required to pay will still be applied, along with other funds, to cover the cost of these drugs and surgeries.

USCCB continues to urge HHS, in the strongest possible terms, actually to eliminate the various infringements on religious freedom imposed by the mandate.

For more details, please see USCCB’s regulatory comments filed on May 15 regarding the proposed “accommodation” go here.

  1. Professor Eire once sent me the nuns pictured here with the caption, “Not the virgins they were expecting.”
Biden’s resculptured face and eyes, and whitened teeth, not to mention his hair, make him look rather strange. I could swear I saw him glancing at the tv monitor at the dem convention to check himself out with his new “stuff”

  2. Professor,

I bet this issue has gone unnoticed by the MSM for fear of harming the Obama ticket with the Catholic vote…

    asombra,

You’re right again, the RCC should unrecognized Biden and all those politicians that support these anti-Catholic values. Unfortunately I feel the Church hierarchy does not do enough about this issue.
