Ros-Lehtinen: Shameful that democratically elected leaders in Chile would share forum with murderous tyrant Raul Castro

PRESS RELEASE

January 22, 2013

As Raul Castro Travels To Chile For Summit, Ros-Lehtinen Says It’s Shameful That Democratically Elected Leaders Would Share A Forum With A Murderous Tyrant & Calls For Responsible Nations To Demand Democratic Reforms in Cuba, Ros-Lehtinen Says

Washington, DC – Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, made the following statement regarding the presence of Raul Castro at an upcoming summit in Chile. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“It is shameful that democratically elected leaders would share a forum with a murderous tyrant.  Dictator Raul Castro attending a summit in Chile alongside his ALBA cronies is another indication of the threats to freedom and democratic principles that are plaguing our region. It is quite disturbing that many responsible nations in the Western Hemisphere continue to placate the Castro regime and choose to ignore its wanton human rights abuses and totalitarian grip over the Cuban people.

“Latin American leaders claim to support democracy but yet fail to condemn the Castro dictatorship for not allowing free, fair, and transparent elections in Cuba after 50 plus years of brutal oppression. The hypocrisy and double standard must come to an end if we are to truly advance the cause of freedom and liberty in our Hemisphere.

“Democratic leaders must come to their senses and demand true reforms to be implemented in Cuba. The Cuban people deserve our support and solidarity more than ever as they continue to fight for freedom and seek democracy through peaceful means.”

NOTE:  Dictator Raul Castro is scheduled to attend the upcoming EU- CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) Summit in Santiago de Chile on January 25-27, 2013.
