MUST READ: An Open Letter to President Obama from Cuba’s Dissidents

More than sixty dissidents in Cuba have signed on to an open letter addressed to President Barack Obama that provides suggestions and advice to the White House so the U.S. can mend relations with the government of Raul Castro in Cuba. Translated by Babalú's resident scholar Dr. Carlos Eire, the letter offers a clear path to better relations between the two countries based on equality and mutual respect.

Open Letter

Havana, 31 January 2013
Your Excellency Mr. Barack Obama
President of the United States of America

Mr. President:

We approach you respectfully, with the purpose of finding a solution to the petition recently made by Raúl Castro, in which he requested that your government carry out negotiations with Cuba as an equal. We think that this might indeed be possible if you were to take certain steps that would allow for both countries to approach each other on an equal footing in regards to political, economic, and social conditions.

Here are some of the necessary changes you would have to make in your country in order to legitimize that system of yours that you call representative democracy:

  • Have only one political party
  • Establish total government control over all means of production and over all real estate, which would naturally entail the disappearance of all personal wealth, all private enterprise, and all transnational corporations.
  • Supress all personal and economic freedoms, so that none of your citizens can work for themselves or enrich themselves through their own labor.
  • Change the way you conduct your elections, so that the American people don’t have to actually choose between competing candidates, but will instead merely put an “x” next to the names of those nominated by the government, who will then immediately become senators and congressmen.
  • Do not allow for any opposition to exist to your government, and ensure that all dissidents are always discredited.  Accuse them always of being foreign mercenaries in the employ of Russia, or China, or Iran.  Ensure also that all opponents are thrown into prison for any reasons you can come up with, and make sure that they are beaten and injured, even if they are women.
  • You should only have one official news outlet, which will also serve as the in-house organ of the ruling party.
  • You should not give a damn about the American people, and ensure that only your top officials have access to houses, cars, vacations, and travel.  The less you give to the American people, the more subservient that they will be.

We suggest, with the greatest respect, that you discuss these suggestions with your cabinet and the Senate and the House of Representatives, especially since some of those honorable officials agree with us in thinking that we now finally have the chance to solve this problem that has existed between our nations for over fifty years.

Once you implement these measures in your country, the United States will finally have sufficient legitimacy to enter into talks with the Cuban government on exactly the same footing, and there will then be absolutely no obstacles to lifting the embargo.

We await your reply to our missive, thanking you in advance for all that you might do to solve this dispute between our nations, and we assure you that you can count on our very highest regard for your efforts.

Carta abierta

La Habana, 31 de enero de 2013
Excmo. Sr. Barack Obama
