“Yoani Sanchez dropped her hankie–you Republicans better pick it up!” (says the Miami Herald)

From The Miami Herald editors;

"It would be devastating to the cause of freedom for Cuba if the Cuban-American Republican members of Congress would allow Ms. Sánchez’s position on the embargo or partisan wrangling over whose invitation she first accepted (from Sen. Bill Nelson, a Democrat) to steer them away from participating. Ms. Sánchez should see all the diversity that exists in our political system, from all parties.

Who better than Sen. Marco Rubio and U.S. Reps. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Mario Diaz-Balart to showcase the American way?"

One MOE time, in case you missed it: "devastating to the cause of freedom"

    What opportunists. No wonder the Miami Herald is hated by Cuban Americans. No Cuban-American legislator has to my knowledge called for any boycott of Yoani. However, saying that they have to pubically embrace her is something else. The Miami Herald is malicioulsy opening a can of worms. The intent to pubically put the Cuban American community against the wall is evident.

    The Herald lost its credibility on Cuba long ago. Cubans don't owe it the time of day, and self-respecting Cubans should reject it out of hand and dismiss its presumption to tell them ANYTHING regarding the Cuba issue. I wouldn't let the Herald in my house if I got it for free; just touching the damn rag is distasteful to me, and I'm not exaggerating--it's like touching soiled toilet paper.

    I don't agree with Yoani either on this issue, but it makes no sense to demonstrate against her - doesn't that put the demonstrators on the side of the Rapid Response Brigades and the Cuban government? Who is shilling for the Regime in this case?

  • Who at Babalu has ever advocated "demonstrating against her?" Pointing out flaws in her message, the hidden agenda of her handlers, while refraining from stooping to lick her boots is hardly the same as "demonstrating against her."

    Humberto, you are right. No one at Babalu has advocated "demonstrating against her" - my bad. I agree with you that her message is non-threatening. And she is bringing attention to the issue of an open Internet in Cuba for a lot of people who didn't care before about what goes on there. I would call it "successive approximations." She has gotten more attention than the other bloggers because she is a good writer. She doesn't pretend to be The One or to represent anyone. She is not running for public office. I don't imagine she wants anyone "licking her boots" either.
