PRESS RELEASE

April 4, 2013

As We Remember the Loss of 65 Lives Including An American Green Beret In El Salvador, We Remain Mindful Of The Threat Posed By The Castro Regime, Says Ros-Lehtinen

(WASHINGTON) –U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, made the following statement on the recent anniversary of the 1987 attack in a Salvadorian military camp aided by convicted Cuban spy Ana Belen Montes, which killed 65 people, including an American Green Beret. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"As we remember the 1987 attack on a military camp in El Salvador that took 65 lives including an American Army Green Beret, Sergeant First Class Gregory Fronius, we are reminded of the continuing threat to U.S. national security and to freedom in the Hemisphere posed by the murderous Cuban regime, a designated State Sponsor of Terrorism. This attack reminds us of the danger posed by the Cuban espionage apparatus as it was an American citizen working in the highest levels of the U.S. intelligence community, Ana Belen Montes, who gave Castro intelligence agents the location of this camp, resulting in this deadly attack by a Marxist guerilla group.

“Ana Belen Montes infiltrated the U.S. intelligence community and provided U.S. secrets to the Castro brothers so they could then share the information with our enemies who sought to undermine our interests and threaten our national security. Some, either through self-willed amnesia or an inability to see the threat illustrated by these facts, continue to dangerously believe that the Castro regime has changed for the better and that therefore we should placate the regime, which could not be farther from the truth.

“Once again, I continue to urge responsible nations in the Hemisphere and conscientious leaders in our own government to remain vigilant of the threat posed by the Castro regime. Cuba under the Castro brothers needs to be seen for what it is, a platform from which they can do great harm to U.S. interests and to freedom and democracy in our region.”
