R.I.P.: Eva Barbas – Mother of murdered BTTR pilot
Eva Barbas, mother of pilot Pablo Morales dies
Eva Barbas Arango, mother of the Cuban pilot Pablo Morales, passed away this Wednesday afternoon in Port St. Lucie, Florida at the age of 88.
Barbas symbolized a mother's pain over the loss of her son, who was shot down by Cuban MiGs over the Florida Straits.
Although at the time she was living in Havana in a modest apartment in the Luyano neighborhood, Barbas raised her voice and was relentlessly critical after learning of the shoot down of the Brothers to the Rescue planes flying in international waters on February 24, 1996.
The images that began circulating throughout the world at that time showed her as an inconsolable mother, calling the perpetrators of the military action assassins and placing the responsibility on Fidel Castro by name.
Months later she arrived in exile accompanied by her daughter Nancy Morales.
From the moment she arrived in Miami, her presence was seen at every public demonstration and event in memory of the four pilots assassinated and those denouncing the Cuban regime.
