The Diversity of Cuban-Americans
I’ve often said that the Cuban-Americans from the Historic Exile (1959-1979) don’t have anything in common with Cuban-Americans who left Cuba after the Mariel Boatlift in 1980. Culturally and politically, they are like two people from two different planets.
Ones are political refugees who have not returned to Cuba (except some who have returned for humanitarian reasons to visit elderly close relatives) and the others are immigrants who emigrated for economic reasons and return to Cuba within a year of coming to the United States.
