Here We Go Again with the U.S. Embargo!
There are many uninformed and naïve Cuban-Americans who claim that it's time for the U.S. Government to lift the embargo that it's had against Cuba since 1962. They base their arguments on the fact that the embargo has been ineffective in restoring democracy to Cuba, as the Sierra Maestra actors still run the country.
But, if the embargo were so ineffective, wouldn't it be logical for the Cuban authorities to ignore any talk on this subject? Well, that is not the case.
Cuba will be asking the United Nations for the 22nd consecutive year, on October 29, 2013, to condemn the United States for imposing an economic embargo against the island.
But, condemnations are cheap and ineffective! And we know that our Machiavellian foes in Havana do not undertake any venture if they think that it would be a waste of time. The only time that Cuban officials complain about anything is when it hurts them.
According to Deputy Foreign Minister Abelardo Moreno, the U.S. embargo has done “astronomical” economic harm. Rather than tapping the United Nations which to many has proven to be a toothless tiger, I think that Abelardo should reach out to Walter Mercado to get a better astrological reading.
I'm fully aware that Cuban officials proclaim that the U.S. embargo hurts primarily the Cuban civilian population. But, since when do Cuban officials give a damn about the welfare of the Cuban civilian population? Just look at the physical harassment that Cuban official render regularly to the peaceful and harmless Ladies in White. And what about the alleged assassination of human rights dissidents like Orlando Zapata Tamayo, Oswaldo Payá, Harold Cepero, and Laura Pollán? Why don’t these Cuban bureaucrats complain about the mysterious disappearance of these human rights dissidents to the United Nations?
Cuban officials indicate as part of their propaganda that “dissidents on the island” also support the lifting of the U.S. embargo. In fact, Cuban officials show their disdain for one of the few human rights dissidents (Yoani Sánchez) who supports the lifting of the U.S. embargo by not mentioning her by name. But the truth is that not all human rights dissidents in Cuba support the lifting of the embargo. Prominent Cuban dissidents like Dr. Oscar Biscet, Berta Soler (current leader of the Ladies in White), and Dr. Guillermo Fariñas have advocated for the maintenance of the U.S. embargo against Cuba. They’ve argued that lifting the embargo would give more oxygen to the repressive apparatus.
More importantly, how in the world could the Cuban authorities expect the U.S. Government to show any leniency on the embargo issue when they’ve imposed a 15-year sentence on an American citizen, Alan Gross, for simply handing out laptops and cell phones to the small Cuban Jewish community?
These Cubans are delusional. After being exposed to propaganda for so long, they’ve become the victims of their own lies. They now believe their own lies!
