Cuban-American on the Rise
Cuban-born Rafael Piñeiro finds himself in an enviable position. He’s the number one choice from Hispanic police groups that want to see him become the next commissioner of the New York City Police Department (NYPD) when the next mayor takes over for Michael Bloomberg. Ray Kelly currently occupies this position.
If selected, Piñeiro would become the first Hispanic NYPD commissioner in a department that is about 25 percent Hispanic. He not only has a long and distinguished track record with the NYPD, but he has an impressive educational background.
There is a famous proverb that says "Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle: when the sun comes up, you’d better be running." Piñeiro is ready for the next challenge. He's done his share of pulling himself up by his bootstraps. He is ready. Now, he needs a helping hand to give him that next opportunity.
