Castro’s Court Castrato (Silvio Rodriguez) was chums with Pete Seeger

castratiCUBA CONCERTcastrati3

From Websters: Castrati: a singer castrated before puberty to preserve the soprano or contralto range of his voice (or to ensure his slavish and mistress-like subservience to a Stalinist dictator.)

Unsurprisingly, the Castro regime’s captive (literally!) media contributed heavily to the Seeger tributes and eulogies this week. An article in Castro’s eunuch media by the regime’s eunuch cultural ambassador (singer Silvio Rodriguez who often met with Pete Seeger) relates how, three years ago during a meeting in New York, Seeger lamented to Rodriguez that: “conditions in Latin America had not improved because of the U.S. (Imperialism, presumably.) But that this would change in the next 15 years.”

Thanks for the image Humberto. Thank the Lord I haven't eaten yet...

Humberto, eunuch is certainly apt for this miserable minion, but not castrato (castrati is the plural form). When that "procedure" worked as intended (which only happened in a minority of cases), the results were spectacular, supra-human feats of singing of stunning virtuosity and beauty, albeit quite unnatural, as they were not possible under normal conditions. Silvio has never been even remotely near that league; his voice and singing are quite pedestrian. His supposed talent is as a songwriter or "auteur." It is completely out of the question to class him with the legendary castrati--we're talking different galaxies.

  • Thanks, Asombra. Correction made. (oye pero la verdad que aqui en Babalu se aprenden cosas interesantes!)
