Photo of the century

Syrians wait for food in the ruins of Damascus

They're patiently waiting for food, and they stretch all the way to the horizon, in a hellish landscape.

This century is just beginning, but this is a photo that could easily become its definitive icon -- or at least of this early part of it.

A whole nation has been destroying itself, killing itself, starving itself.  The world does nothing.  It looks away. The tyrant at the center of it all hangs on.

Then a photographer comes along and captures the full horror of what no one wants to see.

Next thing you know, tourists will be flocking there, to admire the ruins and gawk at the suffering hordes.

Welcome to the 21st century.
