“(Cuban DGI agent) Teofilo Acosta boasted recently to a (U.S.)Congressional staffer that he ‘had a number of Senators and Congressmen in his pocket.” (Robert Moss, the London Daily Telegraph, September 3, 1979.)
“(Cuban intelligence Cuban defector) Aspillaga told me that the DGI had enlisted two productive spies inside the State Dept. He said that sometime before his defection (1987) two elected members of the U.S.House of Representatives had been separately recruited. Gerardo Peraza another defector from the DGI told a Senate subcommittee in 1982 that Cuban intelligence had also made clandestine inroads within the US Senate. Peraza did emphasize that the Senate was a major Cuban intelligence target. There can be no doubt that elected members of of both houses still are.” (Brian Latell, Castro’s Secrets, the CIA and Cuba’s Intelligence Machine.)
Remember, as fully-documented by the Venona Papers, Joe Mc Carthy was wrong only in underestimating the extent to which Soviet agents had penetrated the U.S. government.
I also call your attention to the reflexive defense of certain folks:
“Thank you Beyonce and Jay-Z. Welcome to the club of those anathematized and cursed by the McCarthyism of the embargo supporters.” (Arturo Lopez-Callejas, April, 2013)
“I’m sick and tired of these McCarthyite tactics!” (Marifeli Perez-Stable Aug. 2008)
