Health of political prisoner Sonia Garro worsens

After 27 months imprisoned without a trial, the Lady in White is not receiving treatment for a staph infection in her blood and is suffering from steatosis, fatty liver disease

Political prisoner Sonia Garro, who has been arbitrarily held for more than two years at the El Guatao women's prison east of the capital, described her critical situation in a note she sent to independent journalist Dania Virgen Garcia.

According to Garcia's report in Primavera Digital, the Lady in White is suffering from various ailments that were diagnosed while she was imprisoned and have worsened, among them a staph infection in her blood. In November, Garro was transferred to a hospital, but the treatment to deal with the infection was never given to her.

Moreover, just a few weeks ago she was diagnosed with an excessive amounts of fatty tissue in her breasts as well as fatty liver.

The physician assigned to Unit 8 of El Guatao, Dr. Elkin, has not shown up for work. Meanwhile, four other doctors that work at the prison say they are not authorized to treat prisoners that are not in their assigned units.

When Garro addresses them, they tell her that she is not part of their "job description." Among the physicians who have refused to treat her is Dr. Michel Gounier.
