You ever think twice about being a Republican?
I did yesterday. Not because I think the Democrats are any better, but because of certain conservatives who sure do live up to certain criticisms.
I have had more than one liberal Democrat admonish me for siding, and I quote, "with racists." Once, even, a liberal Democrat said this to me: "I dont get it. You come here with your brown skin and you align yourself with racists." His own racist remark completely beyond him.
But yesterday I recieved an email with a link to Debbie Schlussel's blog that when I read the post in question, not to mention the subsequent comments, I literally got sick to my stomach.
The post in question, titled "On Castro's Death, Mariel Boatlift 2: Another Reason to Table Guest Worker Amnesty", can be found here.
While Ms. Schlussel makes some valid points in that post - it is the following chicken-little-sky-is-falling statement that knotted my stomach:
Authorities fear that upon his death, a mass migration even greater than the 1980 Mariel Boatlift--which put 120,000 Cuban criminals on our shores--will occur.
Get that? Everyone that came through the Mariel boatlift is a criminal. All 120,000 of you.
While everyone knows that fidel castro used the Mariel boatlift to purge his jails and mental institutions, the 120,000 criminals remark is completely off base and unfounded. Ms. Schlussel, however, cites in her comments section that she quoted the original Miami herald article, but no where in said article does it claim that there were 120,000 criminals. It's an exaggeration...no... it's a fabrication, on her part in order to work her readers into a lather. Adding that one word "criminal" behind the actual total number of Mariel refugees is not only deceptive, but shows a complete lack of journalistic integrity. Unless, of course, Ms. Schlussel truly believes that all 120,000 Mariel boatlift refugees werent political refugees but "illegal immigrants", and therefore criminals. Then, perhaps, those liberal Democrats I mentioned above were on to something.
The truth of the matter is that the majority of the Mariel refugees have integrated successfully into the fabric of the United States. The majority has assimilated just like their predecessors. The majority have become American citizens, just like their predecessors. And the majority of those 120,000 "criminals", as Ms. Schlussel calls them, vote Republican.
To make matters much much worse, one of Ms. Schussel's readers, a Rich B., made the following comment:
Given their track record, the shit-stains at ICE will probably welcome this wave of human excrement with open arms. It seems one of the tragic problems with our leaders and politicians is they never seem to learn from history or their own mistakes. I weep for the future of Florida.
A wave of human excrement. People seeking the very same freedoms Mr. Rich B. enjoys are, according to him, shit. Moreover, the State of Florida is in peril.
Had Mr. Rich B been able to see past his preconceptions and bigotry, he might have notice a few realities vis-a-vis Cuban immigrants:
- We vote primarily Republican.
- We have one of the strongest lobbies politically in the country.
- South Florida has progressed exponentially since the first waves of we human excrement arrived.
- We have a Cuban-American Senator, Cuban-American representatives, and other Cuban-Americans serving in the current administration. The majority are conservatives.
- South Florida is an economic powerhouse.
- The majority of Cuban-Americans do not belive in the guest worker program or amnesty for illegal aliens and have been quite outspoken about it.
As I have mentioned here many times before, as an American of Cuban descent, I do not appreciate being lumped in as a "hispanic" or "latino." This is precisely the reason why. The majority of Cubans come here as political refugees, and while they do prosper economically, they are afforded the one thing they lacked in their home country: freedom.
So, to Rich B and Debbie Schlussel: dont misrepresent us. Dont slap us across the face. Do not denigrate us. Florida has 27 electoral votes and the Cuban-American vote carries a lot of weight.
Remember Election 2000.

Well said. Idiots like these don't belong in the Republican party. They should sign on with David Duke and his gang of racist morons. The unfortunate thing is that no matter who is in power, eventually power will corrupt and in doing so, these political sacks of hot air forget the very principals of their party and what got them elected. When I think of greats as Goldwater and Reagan and the principals they espoused, it is sad to see how the great principals of the GOP are distorted and taken hostage by demogauges.

Here's the comment I just left on Schlussel's site:
Rich, Rich, Rich. Where do I begin? As an American of Cuban descent, I am deeply offended by your racist statement. It's not just because of the amazing stupidity you dsiplay for all to see by saying it, but also because you don't have a fucking clue as to what happened here in SoFla in 1980. I've lived here since 1962 and have lived through all of it. So let me educate you a bit -- if that's possible.First, the "wave of human excrement" you refer to were people who wanted freedom, the very same freedom you enjoy today that allows you to show the world what a blithering idiot you are. Second, Of the 125,000 Mariel boatlift refugees -- not immigrants -- that came here, only a small percentage were criminal. I know because I was involved at my place of work in a massive relief effort to help our newly arrived brethren from Cuba. Were there criminals? Yes. Were they all criminals? Of course not. Third, what ethnic groupo do you belong to? Have you ever been called "human excrement" or some other variation of that? Fourth, If you come to SoFla, maybe you can go to one of the dozens of restaurants owned by the "human excrement" of Mariel or shop at stores opened by the "human excrement" of Mariel or maybe talk to the US Citizen children of the "human excrement" of Mariel, taxpayers all, Americans all.
Don't "weep for the future of Florida" Rich. Just stay out. Just put your hood back on, go back to your Klan meetings, and just leave us alone.

Unfortunately when it comes to issues of immigration AND race (together, not individually), too many Republicans show a very ugly side, one that most of us wouldn't even dream of associating ourselves with.
I wouldn't use those morons as examples of what Republicans are or stand for.

Unbelievable. I can't believe the putrid garbage that just came out of that pair. I am speechless. Those clowns don't belong here. Cigar Mike has it right, as usual. They are David Dukesters.

Well, in Venezuela there used to be a popular joke about Cuba that said: "What is the most beautiful part of Cuba?. Answer: Miami!". And as a cuban friend once told me: "you know Miami?, well, Miami (and I think most of Florida where cubans live) is what Cuba could have been without Fidel". Nobody can deny the success of the cuban inmigration, doing that is to show ignorance.

Val:
Having spent several years working with AMERICANS in Miami and Hialeah that came from Cuba, I only wish the rest of Florida (and the U.S.) had such great patriots and terrific citizens.
Don't even think about giving up on REAL Republicans. We can't clean up the Party if people like you are on the outside.

Here's my comment I just left on Schlussel's site:
Hey, Rich Before you call me a ignorant baiter, know that issue first. South Central hahahaha never been to California. Are you calling yourself an articulate person Rich?anyone who read a crappy blog like this can't be articulate. It is just ashame that due to the stupidity of some idiot like rich and Deb who are obviously a racist, biggot and propagandist who are pretty isolated about reality.I find it fascinating, how stupid people evolved themselves on this issues. Yeah, absolutely I agree with Val Prieto but correction is NO Jews in the KKK..hahaha.The problem is that some people, like Deb and Rich, only think on that surface of the issues. We are dealing with very irrational people here,so is very evident we cannot continue using rational means because some people are totally paranoid.(Hence Deb and Rich).

Crap like this makes me embarrased to be part of the Republican party. Perhaps if Deb spent some time in Cuba she would learn not to begruddge another human being life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
I think there are few people who better understand the values that made America great than the people who have fled a communist country.
Several years ago a Russian family visited our church. I listend to the mother describe how there underground church had cut up a Bible and split it between their members so that if the communist government caught one of them, parts of the Bible would still be in the hands of the other church memebers. When she came to America she was shocked to discover that even our hotels had Bibles in them.
Most Americans just don't really know how valuable freedom is because they have never lived without it. We need an element in our society that has experienced the lack of it.

Pero, are we surprised? Go to the "heartland," go to the South. It's full of these types of conservatives (many of whom vote Democratic locally for the pork) who still cry over Reconstruction. I encountered them in the Army many times. They'd sit there spewing hate from their tobacco-chewing mouths. These ignorant f*cks are a big part of the so-called Republican base.

TO BABALUBLOG and MY MANY CUBAN-AMERICAN FRIENDS:
I'm very sorry if the comments by myself or others in the post referred to herein offended you. I hope you will accept my apologies, as my post was never meant as an attack on Cuban Americans, whom I so deeplay respect. I have always been a strong advocate of the Cuban people who sorely want freedom, but have been denied it by Fidel Castro and his Communist henchmen. I also have always been a strong advocate of the Cuban Americans who came here for the freedom and peace they do not have in Cuba. From Armando Valladares to Elian Gonzalez, to the recent Cubans who were denied freedom even though they set foot on a bridge on dry land in the U.S., I am with you. Cuban Americans are among the most patriotic, hard-working, loyal people I've encountered in our great country. They are the model of the desired legal immigrant.
If my post offended you, and if I am wrong about the number of criminals in the Mariel Boatlift in 1980, please forgive me and accept my apologies. It was not meant to attack Cubans, but to point out that the government is planning for this, and that if, indeed, Castro dies and there is mass immigration here from Cuba, law-abiding immigrants or not, we are NOT equipped to handle it. That is the truth. I do not agree with any of the comments attacking Cuban Americans. My apologies for them.

I accept your apology Debbie. If you read Val's posts and comments, and mine as well, on this blog, you will see that we too are concerned by unfettered illegal immigration into the US. What I cannot abide by is the racist tone that your commenters -- obviously agents provacateurs -- have taken in the commentary. We have banned (and still ban) commenters and trolls who do nothing but attempt to corrupt honest debate with propaganda and ad hominem attacks. I sincerely hope that you'll do the same with "Thee_Bruno" and "Rich B" and delete there hateful, racist comments. They are a cancer on your blog.

Ventanita, the assholes who provoked the controversy are filthy, stinking, motherless trolls who specialize in this kind of propaganda. I can't wait for them to come here so I can ban their asses forever from commenting...

I'm glad and relieved that Debbie Schlussel is the person I thought she was. Only a couple of her commentators are pukes. If it were my blog, I'd delete them. I love that little 'poof' noise that comes of deleting such human garbage. Then I put them on the spam list so they can't come back.

Debbie Schlussel has been vying for the title of "Spawn of Ann Coulter" for some time, now. I just can't take her seriously.

I find myself in the weird position of actually defending Debbie. We went to the same college, I talked to her a couple of times, and she was very supportive of our pro-democracy in Latin America group, that was anti-Castro. She was perhaps a little over the top- always funny- but I would never call her a racist.
The reality is that Republicans represent Middle Class white folks from suburbs and small towns - like most Americans really nice people. But sometimes ugly attitudes do come out from a vocal minority of folks, when you hit the right buttons. And immigration is one of those buttons.
I used to be a Republican - one reason I am not a Republican anymore is the kind of attitudes displayed on that board.
As far as Cubano-Americans are concerned. Remember the bumper sticker "Will The Last American to Leave Miami Please Bring The Flag"? The further out of Florida you get, the more people believe that this is "Latin-occupied territory" as much as San Antonio Texas is. I remember in college we were going to play U of M. At a fraternity party we were drinking beer and yelling shit like "Fuck Miami" and someone chimes in, "Yeah F$%k Those Sp$cs"

Boli: Republicans are bad but Democrats are supporters of Hugo Chavez and fidel castro. You'll never see one of them stand up to those kinds of tyrants. Best to be a Republican and yell at them where they deserve it. Of course I understand your frustration. As one of these whites, I consider racist people like you encountered 'mouth breathing cousin-f**kers.' I consider them a lower form of life. Please don't assume all Republicans you meet are that way.

Mora....some of my best friends are midwestern white Republicans :) I would never say that most Republicans are racist/religious fanatics/crony capitalism apologists. On the other hand you might be surprised to know that many Democrats are not left-liberal/Politically Correct/collectivist/anti-American/appeasers.
Thats the problem with this whole Coulter-istas vs Daily Kos-ist online smackdowns. Its a cycle, each side gets outraged by the other, rants about it, comes up with creative insults, and attributes the worse stereotypes to everyone belonging to political party on the other side of the aisle. People on the other side who don't read the blogs, basically get pissed when they hear they are "X,Y, or Z" because they are either Reps or Dems.
People talk over each other, not at each other but and the truth is not important, only scoring points.
