La esperanza no muere

In spite of their differences, several Cuban exile groups are looking towards the island’s future without fidel castro.

Read it here.

Any decisions they may consider are better than the state of the island today.
From their mouths to God’s ears.

  1. With our prayers go our wishes for greatness. The void left by John Paul II will never be easy to fill.
Does anyone know what the process of choosing a name is ?
John Paul II sort of rolled off the tongue
Benedict XVI is going to be a bit of struggle.

  2. So the conclave decides on the name ? (I am such a crappy catholic!)
I thught it’d be like a stage name the pope chose based on past admiration for certain saints, sects etc.
Another question , what is Benedict XVI association with Opus Dai. As I understand John Paul was a staunch supporter of Opus Dai.

  3. KillCastro,
The newly elected Pope choses the name in accordance with his admiration for the works and life of a saint or a previous Pope…
As you put it, it’s kind of a stage name. Also, it can pay homage to a monastic order, in this case it would be the Benedictines.
    Ratzinger is a traditionalist.
I don’t know about any association, at least official, with the Opus Dei, because the Opus Dei is a lay organization with certain participation of the clergy.
If I find more about this I will let you know.

  4. So we COULD theoretically eventually have a John Paul George I ??
My question about Opus Dai is based on certain readings I have come across about their INCREDIBLE anti-communist agenda of Opus-Dei and their willigness to go to whatever extreme is necessary to rid the planet of the red menace. Including working on a dangerous fringe of the catholic church , which *I* for one applaude!

  5. I like Ratzinger for Pope since I know he is a hard liner in opposition to a lot of BSing issues in the Church. And as a Cuban, one thing to look for is that he is opposed to the overly communistic angles of Liberation Theology, which supports and extols idiots like che and fidel. (This is not to say that Liberation Theology is bad, it just needs moderation and separation from Communism.)

However, I am not without worries: John Paul II’s initials were JP2 (which rhymed with “we love you”) and Benedict XVI is B16 (like the bomber) and frightfully so… hehehe…

As a seminarian I am happy to answer some pressing Catholic questions. The Conclave (think Spanish Con Clave -with key) is when the Cardinals lock themselves in St. Peter’s to elect a Pope. However, it is up to the newly elect Pope, and only him, to choose the name.

Personally, I am willing to guess that Ratzinger picked Benedict because Pope Benedict XV (15) was of recent memory (WWI era). Moreover, the name has little ties to the current divisions between “conservative” and “liberal” Catholics (the name Pius would indicate a “conservative” like Pius X or Pius V, and John or Paul would indicate “liberal” like John XXIII and Paul VI.) I think he picked the most recent neutral Pope, and I bet that’s as simple as it gets. After all, you don’t get a whole lot of time to pick a name and so when you go back through the previous names you get: John Paul, Paul, John, Pius, Benedict. But as to a definitive reason why, that’s between Ratzinger and God.

    Long live Pope Benedict XVI!

  6. This is extremely bad news for el barbudo. This new pope has an intellect like steel and a special little cold spot in his heart for communism. He’s the one who engineered the Vatican rebuke of Daniel Ortega and all his slimey liberation theology. He delivered a knockout blow and we have never heard much from those totalitarian losers again. When fidel goes sucking up to him, this PanzerPope is going to give him the intellectual whaling of his life. It won’t be pretty. barbudo ought to wish he dies before it happens. Go Ratzinger!!! Go Pope Benedict!

  7. Yes!! we can all kill comunists in the name of god now!!Long live Benedict XVI!…..

(religion should never be used as politics….its it something that should stay a “personal way of thinking”……but people like you have turned into a “human” organisation (and by human i mean that it is doomed to fail…like every society and empire that we have created). So enyoy it while you can….and use it to clean up coutry’s of whatsoever dictators you think should be punished.Just like extreme islamist use it to run their country’s.)
