Hot off the press from Agencia EFE:
Press freedom watchdog calls Cuba “black hole of Latin America”
Santo Domingo, Sep 13 (EFE).- The person in charge of freedom of the press issues at the Inter American Press Association, Ricardo Trotti, said in Santo Domingo on Tuesday that where freedom of expression is concerned, Cuba is “the black hole of Latin America.” At a symposium on crimes against journalists, Trotti pointed out that 23 Cubans are behind bars “for the simple fact of reporting and expressing opinions.” According to IAPA records, 289 journalists have been killed in Latin America.
A total of 118 journalists were killed in Colombia, 48 in Mexico, 29 in Brazil, and 18 in Guatemala and Peru each.
Trotti, who stressed that he does not believe in magic formulas to combat impunity, suggested stiffer sentences for those who act against freedom of expression and making international aid contingent on respect for freedom of expression.
The two-day symposium titled “Crimes Against Journalists and Impunity in Latin America” that kicked off here Monday has drawn journalists and experts from Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, Spain, Venezuela and the Dominican Republic. EFE lm/mp
