A quiz for Babal? readers (with ANSWERS)

Here are the answers to the quiz. Is anyone surprised at who said what and when? I got these from a superb article written by the great Norman Podhoretz in Commentary Magazine titled “Who’s Lying About Iraq“. Read it for yourselves and decide who is trying to fool who.

Quote number 1: President Bill Clinton (1998)

If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq?s weapons-of-mass-destruction program.

Quote number 2: Nancy Pelosi, future Democratic Minority Leader (2003)

Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons-of-mass-destruction technology, which is a threat to countries in the region, and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process.

Quote number 3: Senator Jay Rockefeller, Democrat Vice Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee (Oct 2002)

There is unmistakable evidence that Saddam Hussein is working aggressively to develop nuclear weapons and will likely have nuclear weapons within the next five years. . . . We also should remember we have always underestimated the progress Saddam has made in development of weapons of mass destruction.

Quote number 4a: Senator Ted (The Swimmer) Kennedy (2002)

We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction.

Quote number 4b: Senator Robert (Grand Kliegle) Byrd (2002)

The last UN weapons inspectors left Iraq in October of 1998. We are confident that Saddam Hussein retains some stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons, and that he has since embarked on a crash course to build up his chemical- and biological-warfare capabilities. Intelligence reports indicate that he is seeking nuclear weapons.

Quote number 5: The New York Times, editorials (1999-2000)

[It is] hard to negotiate with a tyrant who has no intention of honoring his commitments and who sees nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons as his country?s salvation.

(H/T to Mike Pancier although I had already read it when he sent it to me.)

  1. George,
How about a hint or two?
Like the speakers are all prominent members of the Democratic Party, or something like that, talking in the months just before President Bush decided to go ring Saddam’s clock? Hmmmm….???

  2. Earlier this week this was all over the blogs and made rounds in email

    #1 Slick Willie, to JCS
    Nancy Pelosi said #2,
    Teddy K # 4a Robert Byrd #4b
    NYT said #5

#3 wasn’t in the blog I read, guess I’m looking in the wrong places

There was alot of talk as to if this was a hoax or not and sites that expose hoaxes have confirmed these are actual quotes

  4. #3 was Sen. Jay Rockefeller.
Now a few more. Who said:
“We know that he has stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country.”

“Iraq’s search for weapons of mass destruction has proven impossible to deter and we should assume that it will continue for as long as Saddam is in power.”

“He will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has ten times since 1983.”

“Hussein has .. chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies.”

  5. Jeez. I’ll update the site with the answers very soon. Daniel is very close, but no cigar, since he didn’t get #3…

  6. PS, Daniel, when you bet on liberals being liars, dissemblers, and hypocrites, you’ll never lose the bet…

  7. what can i say, im a political junkie.. the way i see it, if you read the left, and you read the right, somewhere in the middle is the truth.. there are alot of informative blogs out there.. the funny thing is, many times, youll read abou the same item from two different view points, and its like they arent even talking about the same thing.. the way i see it, when they made those comments, it was the typical democrat way of licking your finger sticking it up to see which way the wind is blowing, and make your statment or position.. while i may not agree 100% down the line with the right, at least the right knows why they do things, instead of trying to appease the general public

  8. while i may not agree 100% down the line with the right, at least the right knows why they do things, instead of trying to appease the general public

That thump you just heard was me falling off my chair. Holy smokes, Daniel! I am in awe.

  9. George,
Daniel is probably smoking Reality Weed, plain ole Reality Weed.
    Works *every* time.
P.S. And welcome to the club, Daniel!
PPS Does anyone know if ManCamp is open for business yet, now that the hurricane detritus has been cleared, electricity restored, etc.?

  10. just cause i dont support certain issues/ actions in the fight to remove castro doesnt mean i dont know what time it is.. we probably agree on more things that we disagree, we just disagree on the “biggies” that dont let the conversation get past certain points.. ”

  11. Daniel,

No way dude. Im certain you and I could chill at a sports bar and down a few. And there would be no stifling of conversations.

the “biggies” are always subject to interpretation.

  12. its ALWAYS good to down a few!! in fact, throughout history, i bet alot of things could have been avoided and had better outcomes if all the players downed a few!!! unless teddy kennedy is there, then, well, you know…

  13. It’s nice to know that the right has been lying so far as to what the democratic position on Iraq was. I have heard so many time how the democrats were week on defense. It’s great now to find out that they are the poster boy for national defense. Now what I want to know is how any of this lets “W” off the hook for the many blunders in Iraq?
For politicizing the war, or for manipulating intelligence?
And can I remind everyone that just this weekend the white house admitted that they were wrong about their claims of WMD in Iraq. You know you guys are in a meltdown when you have to turn the minority to support your position. Are you guys aware of how childish this makes you look. Are you sure you want to continue with this spin? If you ask me your doing more harm to yourselves and to the war effort than anyone in the minority. keep this up and your going to put the likes of Dennis Kucinich into the white house.
