UNESCO’s castro scam, exposed

Here’s a great article from the Heritage Foundation, describing the latest UN scam to have Cuban dictator fidel castro give Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez an award for ‘making the world a better place’ on the U.S.’s dime. In one passage, the authors write:

Subverting the Memory of Jos? Mart?

Created in 1994, the Mart? award was instituted by UNESCO?s Executive Board ?at the initiative of the Government of Cuba.? It is supposed ?to promote and reward an activity of outstanding merit in accordance with the ideals and spirit of Jos? Mart?. By embodying a nation?s aspiration to sovereignty and its struggle for liberty, this activity has contributed, in any region of the world, to the unity and integration of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean and to the preservation of their identities, cultural traditions and historical values.?

There is a striking contradiction between who Mart? really was and how the Left and Cuban dictator fidel castro imagine him. For decades, the Cuban regime has revered Mart? as a left-wing revolutionary, a manipulation of his memory for political purposes. In reality, Marti was no Marxist radical, but a liberal thinker who opposed all forms of tyranny.

Born in 1853, Jos? Mart? was a Cuban writer, poet, educator, and nationalist who believed that justice, human rights, and individual freedom were the foundation of government. Mart? would have had little time for the Castro regime were he alive today. ?Socialist ideology, like so many others, has two main dangers,? begins a famous remark of his. ?One stems from confused and incomplete readings of foreign texts, and the other from the arrogance and hidden rage of those who, in order to climb up in the world, pretend to be frantic defenders of the helpless so as to have shoulders on which to stand.?[7]

In short, the Mart? Prize was named for a democrat, not a despot. Unlike castro and those who conceived the UNESCO prize in 1994, Mart? did not believe that sovereignty and national determination rest in the persona of charismatic bullies, but rather in each individual citizen exercising his or her free will.
