Burn Baby Burn

From the Free Republic:

It’s being reported on Spanish language radio stations that the artist responsible for the planned Central Park castro statue, has had second thoughts after meeting with leaders of the Cuban Exile community in Miami.

The artist has apparently agreed to BURN the statue instead!

Stay tuned.

*Update: Univision has the story in Spanish, here.

  1. I’ve decided not give this huckster any more free pub and have thus have unpublished my posts about him. What he wants is controversy and there can’t be controversy if nobody knows about him. Screw him.

  2. I have been working with various groups in NYC and NJ on how to coordinate a response. We were thinking of possibly mounting a protest in Central Park, or an awareness campaign, or just ignoring the guy altogether to not garner him any more media attention.

But the guys on La Kalle radio outdid themselves. They did the PERFECT presentation: which was to present the artist with the truth about fidel… from the VICTIMS’ PERSPECTIVE. That was the key to the whole effort. It is a human story that touches anyone who cares to listen.

Luckily, the artist was willing to listen, and his humanity, God bless him, was open to our story.

  3. No, no, Conductor… did you listen to the broadcast? I think that this is just another case of a random American dude who doesn’t know much about fidel…. except what the castro-loving mainstream media says.

I heard him on the broadcast, and from what I could tell, I heard a genuine sense of regret in his voice. The guy just DIDN’T KNOW.

But I also sensed that the guy had a true change of heart. He heard the true story of el pueblo Cubano and he said that he would donate the statue to the Cuban community in Miami and burn it.

Kudos to the DJs of La Kalle! They did a hell of a job. I got all choked up listening, up here in NYC.

  4. I hope you guys are right. We’ll see what the guy does. Actions speak louder than words. What he should do instead of burning the statue is have an other press release written explaining that he was deeply touched by the first hand accounts of the cruelty of the castro regime and that he has decided that the sculpture is innappropriate/insensitive and therefore he will be dismantling it privately.

A burning of anything (even a sculpture of castro) will be siezed by our enemies as another frothing at the mouth episode of censorship by the Miami Mafia.

  5. “será traída ese mismo día a Miami para ser quemada y enterrada.”

    Excellent. This turned out well.

We’re educating people one castro- and che-loving schmuck at a time.

  6. Conductor you’re right another press release would be better. And you’re right about the media’s coverage. A local newspaper you’re well acquainted with has already published a story with that old canard, quoting Edwards representative as wondering if he changed his mind due to fear of retribution from a mob.

  7. I’m with Conductor. When’s the last time a castro lover had a sudden change of heart upon hearing the truths of his brutality? I smell a rat and I think it will only be a matter of time before we see an article published talking about how ironic it is that the Cuban community in Miami wants to impose censorship on an artist in the same manner they accuse castro of doing.

It’s possible the guy really did have a change of heart. But I find it hard to believe that he just picked castro at random as the subject of his sculpture. I’m sure he’s read plenty of accounts of his “great humanitarian deeds” in his liberal, artistic circles and has been a fan for quite a while.

Maybe I’m just paranoid, but it wouldn’t be the first time we have been set up and portrayed as an intolerant, intransigent bunch. I’m tired of us ending up with the short end of the stick and I wouldn’t want to facilitate another smack down by the liberal media.

  8. I agree with Conductor a 100%. This smells fishy, I think I would rather have the guy dismantle it on his own in private and go to Harlem and explain to his Harlem fans why he chose that and explain to them how castro has destroyed Cuba and how he has violated the Cubans’ most basic human rights. That and only that would be his real contribution to the Cuban cause: only by exposing the truth publicly would he redeem himself. I want him to acknowledge his mistake and to explain to Castro’s ignorant Harlem fans the truth.
I don’t want all that burning media-frenzy driven reaction. Cubans want freedom for Cuba because it is reasonable to want it and because freedom is every human being’s right. I dislike when the liberals/leftists call us knee-jerk reactionaries to excuse the fact that they are favoring the dictator Castro.

  9. i applaud his change of heart. i think all of you should give him the benefit of the doubt, he has seen the error of his ways. it was very courageous of him to change his mind. please take notice of that!

true, he’s not prosthelytizing his new found change of heart in harlem, but give him time. don’t be so harsh.

  10. The artist, just wants publicity..so does La Kalle, those punks’ll do anything to get their ratings up..as far as I know the guy is a commie..HE KNEW, 41 years old and he didn’t know anything about castro and his tyranny? Please spare me the bullshit. As far as I know, I heard he’s not gonna burn it, he’s gonna have it put in Central Park anyway.

    Let the egg throwing begin.
