Cuba Blocks Swedish Alcohol Initiative
Sweden’s bid to get United Nations-endorsed measures to curb alcohol abuse has been blocked, by stiff resistance from Cuba.
Sweden wanted the World Health Organisation to develop a global action plan to cut alcohol abuse. Cuba rejected the plan however, fearing restrictions on alcohol would hit rum production, its fifth biggest foreign currency earner. Officials at the Cuban Foreign Ministry told Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet, that alcohol abuse was mainly a problem for developed countries, and that poorer countries had more serious health issues to consider, such as AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

  1. “that alcohol abuse was mainly a problem for developed countries, and that poorer countries had more serious health issues to consider, such as AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.”
When did Cuba start hiring comedians?

  2. The comedians at the foreign ministry forgot to add lunatic tyrants and communism to their list of more important health issues facing ‘poorer countries’.

  3. Could it be that Raul is starting to exert his influence on Cuban foreign policy?..this is a topic that’s close to his heart errr liver..

  4. Please remember that Sweden has written the book on Seasonal Affect Disorder. Their attempts to curb alcohol abuse are interesting due to the high suicide rate that country experiences.
On the one had I disagree with Cuba’s assertion that AIDS and famine are hurt by raising awareness about alcohol abuse. If people spent less time drinking some of that time would shift to caring about those issues.
On the other hand I agree that the UN has no place in legislating morality. Who they think they are? Congress?
And if I had a third hand I would say that I hope that the UN goes ahead with Sweden’s plan. Hopefully their anti-alcohol ways would finally drum up enough support to get remove the UN from this country.

  5. I agree with you. I don’t want the pleasure police legislating what I can drink. It’s just funny that Cuba’s biggest exports (Rum and Tobacco) are proven health threats, all while they claim to be leaders in public health.
