Good friend Dr. Antonio de la Cova will be presenting his book The Moncada Attack at Books & Books in Coral Gables at 7:00 PM tonight. C-Span 2 will have a camera there to tape the reading for their Book TV feature. I urge all Babalu readers in the Miami area to see Professor de la Cova’s presentation. You won’t regret it. Among other things de la Cova busts several myths about the Moncada attack that come from both the pro and anti-castro sides.

  2. Hey guys wanted to pass this along. The Brasilian press is all over this story. Seems the Cuban athletes here for the Pan American games are making ends meet by selling their uniforms. I am nowhere near Rio, but if I was you can bet I would get my hands on one of the now famous Adidas bionic track suits. Article says they are going against ‘socialist’ tradition and selling the suits for US$150 and up, because well, they need they money. They also brought cigars by the suitcase full to sell here. They sold them at prices lower than what the shops sell them for here (about US$200)

    Os atletas de Cuba estão subvertendo a tradição socialista do país comandado por Fidel Castro. Em terras brasileiras, os cubanos transformam os uniformes de descanso em dólares. Voluntários e funcionários da Vila Pan-Americana estão fazendo a festa com o impulso capitalista dos atletas. Por US$ 150 (cerca de R$ 280), em média, podem se vestir oficialmente como campeões do Pan com a calça e o casaco dos atletas.
    Considerados um dos mais bonitos das delegações que ocupam a Vila, os agasalhos dos cubanos podem ganhar agora a fama de mais sujinhos. É que os atletas ganham da fabricante Adidas três conjuntos de calça e agasalho para revezar as peças na lavanderia. Como estão vendendo dois, só têm o do corpo para circular quando estão fora das competições.
    Um atleta que pediu para não ser identificado conta que, dependendo do freguês, o preço pode subir. “Tem gente que consegue US$ 200 pelo conjunto”, diz. O desportista revela que o escambo representa mais que uns trocados. Segundo o cubano, 400 dólares para um atleta do país é bastante dinheiro. O salário mínimo de Cuba é de 225 pesos, o equivalente a US$ 100 (cerca de R$ 187).
    Os atletas contam que o país fornece moradia, educação, alimentação e uma bolsa para custear despesas para cada atleta. Ele afirma que dá para viver, mas o gasto com pequenos luxos, como lembranças do Brasil, será bancado por lucros conquistados graças à venda dos agasalhos.
    O comércio Brasil-Cuba da Vila foi mais longe. Alguns atletas trouxeram nas malas até 15 caixas de charuto cubano. Para os tabagistas, o Pan foi vantagem. Uma caixa de charuto que custa cerca de R$ 400 é vendida pela metade na Vila.

  3. Hmmm, the papers here are full of Cuban athletes deserting. Perhaps that is why they are selling their uniforms…….more power to them !!!

  4. Did Books & Books have all of three copies to sell? It doesn’t seem they were very well prepared to meet the demand.
    It was a great presentation and I appreciated the bit at the end about reconciliation. I know for me it’s hard not to look at anyone who associated with fidel and wonder about them.

  5. They had 45 copies and sold them all. Remember this book retails for $60. I’m guessing they didn’t want to be left with a lot. I don’t think they were prepared for the interest or the turn out.
