The Cuban dictatorship’s propaganda machine describes today’s “elections” as an example of “genuine participatory democracy,” as if the island is just a tropical version of Iowa or New Hampshire — without the the hassle of giving voters a real choice of candidates.
Independent journalist Guillermo Fariñas saw through the farce, and took it upon himself to urge his fellow citizens to stay away from the polls.
For his trouble, Fariñas tonight is under house arrest, under the watchful eye of the dictatorship’s police and street gangs.
