Mike Lowell (left) wins the World Series MVP. I had the opportunity to speak with him once, very briefly, at a golf tournament several years ago and he was a very nice and down to earth guy. Additionally, I have a mutual friend who is always bragging about Mike. This is the second World Series victory for Lowell, who plays third base for the Boston Red Sox and played for the Marlins’ 2003 Championship squad. He went to Gables High and FIU and still makes his home right here in South Florida. Congrats Mike. You done good. You done really good.

Didnt the Marlins say he was all washed up? Hell no! I also saw that Josh Beckett is a Red Sox also! They purchased all our “Marlin” talent in a basement bargain sale to wil the World Series. I am happy for them all pero cono! What got caca in Miami (Footbal & Baseball).
Guajiro, they were traded to Boston for young talent including future superstar Hanley Ramirez.
What’s great for Mike is that he’s now a free agent and will make a lot of well deserved money.
Congrats Mikey
As a proud member of Red Sox nation, and of course the cuban american community, I was beyond giddiness when Lowell was awarded the MVP last night. I actually felt proud of him, and was warmed by the “re sign Lowell” chants coming from the stands.
I hope Boston will make him a good offer to keep him here. His sense of “team” does wonders for the team.
GO RED SOX!!!!
The Marlins acquired Annibal Sanchez and Hanley Ramirez in the deal for Lowell and Beckett. That was a deal that worked out for both sides. The Marlins couldn’t afford to pay Mike $10 Million per year and keep Cabrera out of position in Left field. Fenway Park suits Mikey much better than Dolphins Stadium. It’s all good.
Agree with Henry about the trade working out for both the Red Sox and the Marlins. Lowell’s a class act all the way and a great ambassador for Cuban-Americans. Honestly, his MVP award was the only redeeming thing about this World Series for me.
With a name like Lowell, I didn’t know he was Cuban. Was he adopted?
C’mon, don’t you know that Cuba was a true melting pot BC?
Lowell’s ancestors are Irish, but his parents are Cuban. He was born in Puerto Rico but grew up in Miami.
Just checked him over at Wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Lowell
His dad was Irish and German (doesn’t say anything about his mom) but a Cuban nonetheless. There are a fair number of Mexicans with Austrian/German names because of Emperor Maximilian and all that, and there’s a big German community in Venezuela, but it’s a bit more unusual to hear about northern Europeans in Cuba, at least to me.
He’s also a cancer survivor — he’s well past the 5-year hurdle so chances are great that it won’t come back, so good for him.
I hope the Sox can re-sign him, but if not, they’re the frontrunners in the A-Rod lottery. He’d probably hit 80 homers and win the triple crown at Fenway. But I think Lowell’s got the better glove. Imagine if the Rockies got him, especially if they just happened to forget to turn on the humidor every here and there…
I honestly don’t use Wikipedia. I just don’t trust anything published there.
Congratulations Mike!! I was amazed by his performance!!
