Those Left Behind

A human being who resents his fate, someone who feels he has been robbed of his life and carries the bitterness of one ….who was never able to have long hair like almost every other young person in other parts of the world, who could not listen to the music he liked, see the movies of his choice or read the books which interested him. The list of what’s owed with which I go to the other side is longer than a poor man’s chain of aspirations.
A quote, describing himself, from a rather alarming valedictory letter I received from a relative today. Despite hating the system to the point of “delirium,” he was forced to stay behind by his father who, having fought both Machado and Batista, miscalculated the staying power of yet another dictatorship and the sudden illness of a close relative. Caring for the latter is something he does not regret, although his only aspiration throughout his life has been “to get out of here and forget the hell in which the cruelty of fate has forced me to remain. I never had the opportunity.”
(The Spanish reads more elegantly. The translation is mine.)
Yeah, my fellow Americans, let’s go see the happy brown natives! My heart breaks.
