Conservative, my ass (UPDATED)

Well, well, well. The Huckster has reversed himself on his national smoking ban. it Isn’t it amazing how quickly these liberals in conservative clothing change their policy positions when their way receives a less than enthusiastic reception? (See below.) No balls, no principles.

Hey Huck, take these and shove ’em.

If you’re willing to ban smoking, then you’re no conservative. EVERYONE should know about your pretensions.
Go Fred!

  1. Mi hermano FRED! just plain bulldozed faux conservative Mike Huckabee into the pavement last nite, and they are still picking up the pieces. Too bad Rubio wasted his endorsement on roadkill.
    Viva Fred!

  2. Man I’d walk a mile for a pack of those right now, even further for a pack of my preferred Lucky’s non filtered. We got crappy cigarettes here in Brazil.

  3. At least I could still smoke cigars in the Vegas casinos.
    Suck crap.
If Fred wasn’t such a lousy campaigner and wouldn’t have waited so long, he’d fare better IMHO and with a real cigar smoker as Prez maybe a federal law could be passed negating all state and local legislation banning cigar smoking and leave the matter to the individual businesses so they can choose whether or not they want to allow smoking or not.
Pisses me off that a business/bar/restaurant etc. cannot have the right to decide what clientele they want to serve.
I hope the holy rollers tell Huck to take a hike.

  4. I think Fred has an ace up his sleeve. Today he was endorsed by Human Events. I think there’s one more huge endorsement coming, probabluy early next week.
Anyone wanna take a guess which one?

  5. Could someone please clarify this ban business? If it is a ban in public places then I am all for it. I should not have to risk my health for another’s preference. If it is a ban in private places then it is wrong. And I am a far right conservative.

  6. Pototo, with all due respect, if you are willing to ban a legal (heavily-taxed) activity, you are not a conservative — a McCain moderate, maybe: stifling speech, granting amnesty while banning smoking. If a state wants to do it, fine. That’s constitutional and in accordance with the 10th Amendment; but the Federal Government telling me it’s going to ban an activity that they tax? I don’t think so.

  7. pototo they use the fallacy of second hand smoke and healthcare costs for workers (workers compensation) as the excuse to require all establishments open to the public such as restaurants; bars; etc. to ban smoking.
they enact few exceptions. Here in florida, if you serve no food, you can allow smoking or if you are a private members only club or a cigar shop. otherwise, you’re screwed.
in vegas you can only smoke cigars in the casino floors.

  8. McCain is cool on the subject. IN fact in our firm’s fundraiser for him, we had it at the Havana club where we were all smoking cigars. He did not mind a bit.

  9. George,
We have laws on the books (too many I might add). Some laws though are good. Laws against drinking and driving are good as they protect us from the decisions of others. On the flipside I am against seatbelt laws as they try to protect us from us. But to ban smoking in public places where the public has no choice in going is one thing that falls under the category of the former. To ban it from privately owned establishments where the consumer has a choice where he enters falls under the category of the latter. To label someone not a conservative for that is erroneous. So again I ask what does this proposed ban consist of? The former or the latter? That makes a world of difference.

  10. Cigar Mike,
I think that is the key in my argument. I do not consider a privately owned restaurant a public place. I am speaking of courthouses. utitliy companies, parks, etc. I am against smoking in places that I cannot avoid nor should have to avoid because of smoking if that place is not privately owned. A privately owned establishment should establish their position which will be driven by the desires of the clientel. So I guess that makes me a health conscious conservative.

  11. Mike,
BTW think a candidate would complain about smoking at a fundraiser for him? 😉
I also like the smell of a good cigar. But I have experienced the results of smoking as my dad died from it.

  12. I have no problem with the government deciding what is ok in a government building; I just don’t want them telling me (a private business open to the public) that I cannot allow a legal activity to occur on my premises. it’s absurd.
My old man died of a heart attack which i’m sure was caused by years of smoking cigarettes. I never smoked them and do not like them. I smoke cigars and like former president clinton, I don’t inhale.

  13. “I guess some of you like actors portraying a president??” It’s better than the Dem frauds pretending they love this country and wanting to be prez…
Peter, here’s a litmus test: what’s your opinion of Ronald Reagan?

  14. Pototo, there is ZERO evidence linking second-hand smoke to any diseases. The so-called “evidence” paraded around for years as the club countries have used to “ban” smoking comes from a World Health Organization that has been thoroughly discredited.
This has degenerated into nothing more than a cash grab (via confiscatory rates of taxation on the product) and another set of controls on the populace (to modify behavior). Period.

I just don’t want them telling me (a private business open to the public) that I cannot allow a legal activity to occur on my premises.

    Amen!

  15. I opposed the campaign finance bill but it was signed by the Prez and plenty of conservatives signed off on it too and it was validated by the Supremes.
I think it should be repealed by congress. won’t happen though.
I could easily support rudy, thompson or mccain if either of them get the nod. I have no qualms. I’m not a one issue guy and don’t expect to agree with anyone guy on everything. The only thing i can agree with is that I cannot support O’bama, O’Hillary or O’edwards. If huck or romney get the nod, that will be tough for me.

  16. Dubya was dead wrong when he signed that bill.
As for choosing a candidate in November, if the choice is between a one-legged, lobotomized, feces-throwing chimp, wearing glasses, and a Democrat, I’ll vote for the chimp…
Fred’s the guy I want, though.

  17. I don’t think Thompson would be willing to be #2.
One last thought on 2nd hand smoke. My son has asthma and whenever he is around cigarette smoke he has an asthma attack.

  18. George Moneo, Reagan Who ?
Did He free Cuba or did he allow Cubans to fight for their freedom ?
Same bull from all the candidates.
“I will be the first President to walk in a Free Havana” If you still fall for that bull, you deserve An actor in the White House.
    Mad As Hell Peter.

  19. George, I’m sorry but I don’t think it is a fallacy. Are you going to die from going to restaurants and bars where people smoke? Probably not.
But my grandfather died of lung cancer due to years of working in an environment where everyone was allowed to smoke – closed offices with A/C; government offices I might add.

  20. Peter, I think I already know the answer, but I’d like to know what candidate you’re supporting for President?

  21. George Moneo, So far MCain the rest don’t tickle my fancy, being that my Father served with him in Nam and knows his heart that he is what he says he is, he has my vote here and about 12 of us in this family.

  22. My final word on this. When you open the door to government to control one facet of behavior, you open it for all. I know full well all of the negatives associated with smoking; my point, however, is one of liberty versus incremental socialism/fascism and all that entails. If you guys want government to control my behavior, don’t come crying when they try to control yours…

  23. Never knew there were so many “die hard” smokers in this group. Hope that the term does not translate to their passing
Just glad that there is far less second hand smoke in my face now.

  24. My dad, a huge healthfreak who planned on living to 110, died of lung cancer at the age of 69 yet didn’t smoke and hated smokers much like Larry Daley.
Beverly Sills also died of lung cancer.
I think the biggest disease causer of all is chronic hypochondia.
The big question is, how it’s possible that the government can prevent disease and death?
    That said,
    Go Fred!
