You may recall Deepthroat being the codename that Woodward and Bernstein used for their White House source during the Watergate affair. Deepthroat helped the reporters uncover the scandal using the simplest of suggestions:
“Follow the money.”
For some reason the new purchasing freedoms that Cuban government has finally allowed in Cuba these past weeks keeps reminding me of that phrase. “Follow the money.”
Of course, this is more of a reverse follow the money because, obviously, we all know where the money for the new cellphones, microwaves, toasters, computers and hotel rooms would ultimately end up: the castro coffers.
But the MSM has made nary a mention of where the money for these “luxuries” would come from: the Cuban exile community. Primarily the evil, capitalist, hard line, instransigent, overwhelmingly Republican Miami Cuban exile community.
Which only reinforces what I made mention the other day: raul an co. are in a bind, money wise, and are depending on a Democratic (read: Obama) victory come November’s Presidential elections. It also confirms what Ive been saying all along: Cuba’s number one export isnt rum or cigars or nickel, it’s the Cuban exile.

Its funny that 8 years ago Cuba remodeled the Cienfuegos Airport (and others as well I am sure) at the expectation of a Gore victory and thus American tourists flooding the island. If McCain wins raul will be sorely disappointed.
Well, Cubans abroad have proven to be an extremely reliable and profitable source of income for the regime. It only makes sense to find ever new reasons to get them to send money. They may say awful things about Castro, Inc., but what difference does that really make, as long as they keep financing the operation?
Sorry for what may be an unrelated item, but I wanted to alert you to an item in this week’s New Times (http://www.miaminewtimes.com/2008-04-03/news/che-guevara-who/full) where it appears that Urban Outfitters at Sunset Place is selling the Che Guevara shirts a la Macy’s; they’re even on the stores’ website (http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&navAction=jump&id=14308613&search=true&isProduct=true&color=04). We were successful in getting Macy’s to stop selling the shirts, let’s spread the word about these jerks.
The Cuban government has learned the hard way never to put all their eggs in one basket. First it was the USSR (till its collapse) and now chavez. With all the faux-pas chavez is making lately, raulita knows that the cercopithecidae’s days are numbered. What better way to increase the Cuban coffers –and the same time keep the Cubans busy thinking of better things to come- than to bleed the hated Cuban exile community. The way I see it, raulita will be laughing all the way to the bank. Here we are, keeping his government afloat while at the same time talking about tumbling it.
mad hatter,
Read Henry’s post of April 2, titled “Che Who?”
May I rant a bit? I just got off the phone with one of our suppliers in Canada and an idle comment on my part about wanting a vacation prompted him to extol the virtues of vacationing in Cuba: ‘they’re better educated than North Americans, the health care is phenomenal, yadda, yadda, too bad you Americans are not allowed to go.’ When I replied that no, I wouldn’t go he responded by telling me that he’d been to some of the small villages and ‘really, you don’t have to be afraid.’ We do business regularly with his company so I remained professional and changed the subject, but was so wishing I didn’t have to bite my tongue. I wanted to ask him why he thought Cubans didn’t return the favor and visit Canada, or Europe, or why it’s made the news for days that they are going to be ‘allowed’ cell phones. Grrr. On reflection, he’s right about one thing, Cubans likely are better educated than he is, if he visit and still hold those beliefs.
Thanks. I feel better now.
Retread,
“We do business regularly with his company so I remained professional and changed the subject, but was so wishing I didn’t have to bite my tongue.” El amor y el interes fueron al monte un dia y mas pudo el interes que el amor que te tenia. You missed out on what people now call a “teachable moment”. Don’t let him get away with it next time.
“Cuba’s number one export isnt rum or cigars or nickel, it’s the Cuban exile.”
Well, it sure as hell works for Mexico, so why shouldn’t its Cuban friends do it, too? After all, whatever serves the revolution is fair game.
