Our third President Thomas Jefferson had a way with words. From the brilliant prose of the Declaration of Independence to the Statute of Virginia for religious freedom. Someone sent me this email with a collection of Jefferson quotations which are appropriate in these times of trouble. I guess those on the left would probably call Jefferson a wingnut if he were here today, ya think? If one of us has written or said these things, I’m sure some leftist wanker out there somewheres would say, “those crazy right wingers are promoting hate and violence” ; ” those right wingers are gun nuts and war mongers”, “we need the fairness doctrine back.” Ya think if the lefty wankers out there got laid a bit more they wouldn’t be so angry at the world? If only Congress had read some of Jefferson’s work before they went ape with spending maybe we wouldn’t be in this mess we’re in.
Kennedy once said to a a group of scholars in the White House, “I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered at the White House – with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone.”
The quotes below could prove his point.
When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become as corrupt as Europe
Thomas JeffersonThe democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.
Thomas JeffersonIt is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes. A principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world.
Thomas JeffersonI predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them.
Thomas JeffersonMy reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government.
Thomas JeffersonNo free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms.
Thomas Jefferson
The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government.
Thomas Jefferson
I’m sure some leftist wanker out there somewheres would say, “those crazy right wingers are promoting hate and violence” — Yes, while all the time referring to themselves as the “Party of Jefferson”.
Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.
Democrats call themselves the party of Jefferson (they aren’t). Republicans call themselves the party of Lincoln (they aren’t). No one seems to want to take the trouble to find out who these men really were, what they believed in, and why they did the things they did. Very sad.
We haven’t had a President who could carry Jefferson’s jock in about a century. But still they think they are qualified to say he was wrong, to change what he set forth, based on nothing more than the fact that he held the office 200 years ago and so couldn’t possibly understand the world as well as they do. Ignorance or hubris, it doesn’t matter which but it’s leading us to ruin.
The reps of the previous congresses were disgusting, I agree. But this group interests me. And I hope we can add to it in 2010. If we can get a real core of conservatives in congress, then even Matt will be able to find that dimes worth of difference between the two parties.
I can only hope, Honey 🙂
But when the one true conservative running last election was called a wingnut by his own party and completely marginalized by the media, I won’t hold my breath. The only real progressive liberal in the race, as opposed to corporate socialist or whatever other kind of socialists they had running got the same treatment, so it’s not a problem that’s specific to the Republican party by any means.
