Our Dear, dear “Hispanic brothers and sisters” unload on Willi Chirino

“Despite (Willi Chirino’s) presence, the concert was a delicious tribute to Salsa music….

Chirino–better known for his anti-Castro activism than for his music–is no salsero, despite what he might claim. His music is a strange fusion that some call the “Miami sound,” and he’s not a good interpreter even of that….

Chirino has never been a good vocalist and here he sounded tired, stiff and we could barely understand what he was singing..

He was backed by an orchestra (all-Cubans, he stressed) and a choreographer who danced and sang almost as badly as Chirino did..his most pathetic number was “Cuba how beautiful is your scenery”…which was accompanied by an anti-Castro video…”

Entire “Latino” hatchet job (in Spanish) here:

And wouldn’t you know it? The writer also happens to be a major Benico del Toro fan??!!

  1. He should talk, his people ditched their music for reGAYton. I fear if our culture does not snap out of it, then all that will come out of Cuba is that same horrid music. It’s already happening.

  2. As much as I respect Chirino’s politics and his willingness to be so consistently and publicly anti-Castro he’s not Larry Harlow and he’s not El Gran Combo. Those two acts are palabaras mayores in Latin music. Willi is a favorite son but Beny More he ain’t.

  3. Can’t remember who said it, but one of the must useless and endangered jobs in times of recession has to be that of an arts critic. This is typical ideology-driven Cuban-bashing; if Vives of Juanes had sung about the beauty of Colombia, or his own artists had raved about “PRico que lindo eres,” it would have been great. I don’t pay much attn to these loons because behind it all is hunter-green envy; like I always say, la envidia se los come vivos.

And lastly, here where I live salsa is big – well, it’s huge, and virtually all the good bands are filled with Cuban musicians and I’ve observed that the “hispanic paisano/as” who come out to the clubs dance primarily to Cuban music, it’s what they want: regaeton is only played during the intermission when the band takes a break. We don’t pay to dance to that. Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Mejias — get a life; better yet, get a REAL job.

  4. Chirino and our dear “brothers” aside, the vast majority of “stars” are vastly overrated. If I were the typical customer or member of the public, nearly all stars would be neither rich nor famous. They’d be anonymous nobodies doing very mundane jobs.

  5. My guess is that this dear, dear, dear brother is of Mexican heritage. He writes for L.A. papers.

A Californian-Cubana has already seen fit to answer him a letter. Among the highlights:

“Why do I doubt,” writes Gina Perez of San Gabriel, Ca.” that if an act at this festival included a mariachi band and the singer had mentioned that his band “are all Mexicans”–why do I doubt that you would have seen fit to make a snide comment? But Ah! Since they were Cubans..well then it was OK to criticize, right? And do you know why?….”

    Well, we ALL KNOW why….

  6. “…the vast majority of “stars” are vastly overrated.” That’s the best understatement I’ve read all year. 🙂

  7. I WAS AT THAT SHOW THE NIGHT OF THE 22 OF AUGUST. the crowd was one of the best that I HAVE EVER SEEN AT A SALSA EVENT HERE IN LOS ANGELES. 95 PER CENT OF THE PEOPLE WERE ON THERE FEET, HANDS IN THE AIR YELLING…”VIVA CUBA LIBRE’ ,,,CUBA, LIBERTAD, AHORA,,,” WHEN WILLIE CHIRINO SANG HIS LAST SONG WHICH “YA VIENE AMANECIENDO”
PLEASE PEOPLE DID YOU HAVE TO BELIEVE THE CRAP THAT SOME COMMIE A** H*** writes in some rag of a paper?
    GIVE ME A F*****G BREAK!

  8. The fact is that there’s a very strong anti-Cuban sentiment that exists within most of our dear, dear Hispanic brothers and sisters.

Case in point, do those protectors of LATINO DIGNITY–LULAC AND NATIONAL COUNCIL OF LA RAZA– who are always looking for the slightest sign of anti-LATINOISM anywhere it exists [even under a rock] ever step up to the plate and say anything against the foaming-at-the-mouth anti-Cubanism that is constantly hurled at us in the mainstream media?

Can you imagine if Oliphant had made his cartoon against any other Hispanic group?

Did those dear, dear Hispanic brothers and sisters side with us during Elian? Did the Hispanic National Caucus side with us?

  9. Most darker “hispanics” (especially Mexicanos) don’t even consider Cubanos with white skin “hispanic” … despite the fact that we speak SPANISH! So F#ck them.

  10. Mr. Mojito, I can tell you horror stories: I was at a professional dinner one day and one of those “Viva la Raza” type of Mexicans from out west [I believe that this guy was from Arizona] who was sitting next to me and asked me where I was from. I told him Cuban American, and he started shouting at other people at the table, LOOK, A CUBAN, A CUBAN! THOSE people voted for McCain! They all voted for McCain, not Obama! They’re REPUBLICANS!!! Mind you, I did vote for McCain, but I hadn’t told him that I had voted for McCain, nor had I told him what my party affiliation was. The subject had not even been broached. Needless to say, even if I had told him that I had voted for McCain, it was the way in which he OTHERIZED ME and tried to humiliate me in front of everyone, simply because of my ethnic background.

Also, you are right about the way that they feel about cubanos with white skin. Many of the more radical ones have this deep rooted hatred for Spain that is absolutely vitriolic.

Even though “Hispanic” literally means pertaining to Hispania which is the Latin word for Spain, they have co-opted the word and turned it into something meaning BROWN SKIN. The more radical ones don’t even want to use the word “Hispanic” and prefer to use the word, “LATINO” as if “LATINO” didn’t also have a European origin [refers to the Romans]. To them, LATINO means a mestizo. In their ridiculous world of definitions, anyone who is white is not Hispanic or Latino!
