There is still volcanic activity in the Deep of Bartlett (Cayman Trench) immediately south of the Sierra Maestra.
While on the north slope of that range there are a number of massive dams (such as the Corojo Dam on the Bayamo and Guama Rivers) built by the Czechs under the direction of Otto Horsky. Although these dams appear to be well engineered they are built over fault lines.
Were a massive quake to occur during the rainy season, these dams could fracture, and release killing floods greater than any previous “creciente” ever known in historic times.
