Myanmar pro-democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi has been released after spending 7 years under house arrest.

BANGKOK: Pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi greeted more than a thousand cheering supporters at the gate of her lakeside compound on Saturday, calling for unity in the army-ruled country.

“There is a time to be quiet and a time to talk. People must work in unison. Only then can we achieve our goal,” she told the crowd before returning inside her home with senior officials from her National League for Democracy party.

We congratulate Aung San Suu Kyi and we are happy to see she has been freed. We are also happy to see she was not deported from her own country, and neither was she forced into exile.

We can only hope that the pro-democracy activists currently being imprisoned by the Castro regime will also be allowed to remain in their own country.
