Ros-Lehtinen Says Cuban Democracy Programs Lifeline for Oppressed Cuban People

(WASHINGTON) – U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, commented today on the critical need for pro-democracy programs in Cuba.  Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“Programs supporting democracy in Cuba empower those standing up to the Cuban regime by serving as a critical source of support and hope.  The programs represent a lifeline for an island whose dictatorship attempts to choke off all access to the outside world.

“It is regrettable that some would stop funding for programs promoting democracy and human rights in Cuba and suggest that the programs provoked the wrongful imprisonment of a U.S. citizen in Cuba.  We have no apologies to make for standing with people yearning for freedom.

“The role of democracy programs in Cuba is more critical now than ever before as the Castro tyranny currently faces extraordinary pressure from the Cuban people to abandon its broken despotic system.

“At this critical period in Cuba when the people are demanding changes and the regime is struggling to hold its system together, it would be a grave mistake to ease pressure on the Castro tyranny in any way, including by curtailing democracy promotion in Cuba.”
