Now taking the lead…

…Newt Gingrich.

That’s right folks, with the release of the latest CNN/Opinion Research poll Newt Gingrich has overtaken Mitt Romney as the frontrunner in the Real Clear Politics Average of national polls. Newt is currently taking 22.6% with Mitt Romney now chasing from 1.8% back at 20.8%. Cain is at 19.0% and fading, then way down there is Perry with 8% and the also-rans splitting up what’s left.

On October 13th of this year, a little over a month ago I decided to back Newt in his primary run. I’ve posted extensively about him since then. During that time the momentum has swung in his favor. I simply saw what others are coming to realize each and every time Newt speaks: he can best contrast a conservative vision of the future articulately against Obama’s socialist record.

After Obama was elected, I said the first step on the road to recovery was to take the House of Representatives back in 2010. I also mentioned Newt Gingrich in that post:

The next thing you can do is visit the American Solutions web site. It’s a conservative think tank headed up by Newt Gingrich. If anyone can lead us out of the wilderness it’s Newt Gingrich. He’s done it before. I urge you to sign up for their mailing list and donate to American solutions. We need another Republican Contract with America and the architect of the first one is the best candidate to draw up the next one.

Newt’s new 21st Century Contract with America is here.

As I’ve said before, he’s not the perfect candidate and there are things I wish Newt had not done but I’m convinced none of the rest of the candidates has the chops to beat Obama.
