MAYOR OF GALWAY WITHDRAWS SUPPORT FOR GUEVARA MONUMENT

The Mayor of Galway says she will not support plans to erect a monument of Che Guevara in the city.

Plans to erect a monument to the Argentine revolutionary in the Salthill area has sparked outrage from American politicians and Galway businessman Declan Ganley.

Congressman David Rivera, who is the US representative for the Florida district, is the latest to call on the city council to reject the plans.

In a statement, he says it is ‘disheartening and a great disappointment that Galway would consider paying homage to a man whose true legacy is one of cold-blooded execution’.
